First post and it's in the techie section. Hopefully not a bad sign!

Post by elppin » Tue Jul 24, 2018 3:54 pm

Hello all,

New to the forum, and am going to look at a 2.5d Bongo tomorow. It has an auto gearbox fault, and the current owner has been told a new box is required.

Therefore just wondering what the options are with these gearboxes? Can they be repaired? Are there any recommended specialists down South that someone could point me towards? Would picking up a used box be a nightmare due to too many variants?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

The South is a big place. Where are you? Dorset? Surrey? Alabama?

Bongo Spares will ship you a relevant gearbox anywhere, for for fitting at a garage unless you have your own facilities ?

And forum member Alacrity is an auto box expert based in Eastbourne.

There's many a garage said a new box is required when it's something less serious.

Bear in mind this may not be the case with yours, just an observation. 8)

The difficulty is knowing whether to know whether to buy the Bongo without knowing what’s actually wrong.

I guess if i know that worst case, I can get a used box in for a few hundred pound, then I’m ok with that. £2k, not so much.

I have a regular mechanic that looks after my cars, so assume he can fit it ok, although it does look as though the Bongo has a few fitting quirks that he will need to be aware of?

Guess I just have to go and see it, and if the rest is good, I have a decision to make. Excited!

or buy a different van that does not have a problem that could quite easily empty your wallet and test your sanity.
