Misfire on start up 2.5 TD

Post by Gripped » Fri May 11, 2018 11:43 am

Hi all

For a while now (particularly in cold weather, but also in warm) the Bongo splutters a bit for a few seconds after starting, and if you go to rev it, it splutters more. After a minute or so it is fine. Just wondering what is the likely cause. It's been doing it for a long time, so I'm thinking perhaps the glow plugs, or maybe fuelling issues.

Any advice would be great.

:)

Maybe some air getting in the system or glow plugs not as efficient as they should be.

check the vac system and pipework , this operates the cold start solenoids, like an old choke system, when warm they turn off, if the pipes are sucking flat if old, or the wrong type of pipe is fitted it can stop them working or turning off when not needed. then check the 2 solenoids are working next to the glow plugs. when warm the same vac system operates the egr valve too.

This may also be fuel pump seals (same as The Long Road said, air getting in the system). Every now and then ours will be stuttery at start but it is not severe and clears after 10 seconds typically. More common in depths of winter in the cold, like yours. Probably metal is shrinking in the cold and once warmed up it expands and tightens against seals. (I know this as the UK top expert in Bongos did our new head 2 years back and I phoned and mentioned it and he mentioned this the likely cause. It is not consequential and Bongo has never let us down on start up so for now until I get back to Allen's at some point when Bongo specific expertise is next needed I have not had it done.)

Not saying that yours is that but it is a possibility worthy of having in mind given similar symptoms. I don't rev mine when I do get that as it clears in 10 seconds anyway.
