Hello,
Just had the Bongo a few weeks, has a recon 2.0 petrol engine fitted by a dealer in Falkirk. It's an automatic. Has been running OK but now produces a deep loud grinding noise from the exhaust side of the engine when I lift off the accelerator from high revs. The higher the speed when lifting off, the louder the noise. Also make the same noise at idle when cold but this tends to disappear after it's warmed up. Thought it might be a rattling heat shield at first but I've checked and the heat shields seem secure. Any ideas appreciated - I'm in Newcastle upon Tyne.

if you have had the bongo less than 1 month then you covered by a minimum 30 warranty, you should give the dealer a phone and explain the problem, if they are a good dealer then they can be helpful, in some cases you may need to go to a garage to have it fixed and if you are still in the warranty period then the dealer should pay for any repairs that are needed.
Try contacting the dealer first if you suspect a major issue.
Do you have any power issues or do you think you may be getting clutch slip. It sounds very odd the symptoms you describe

Are the engine mounts okay? Could be flex on over run?
We love our rusty Bongo "Billy", despite his many faults!

Check the rubber mounts on the exhaust- had a similar rattle on a car once.

Re: strange noise - exhaust side - 2.0 petrol
is the grinding noise a good description of the noise.?
the 2 ltr has a twin wall exhaust on the 1st section from the engine, they are known to split on the inner skin and it makes a real weird noise as the escaping gasses resonate against the outer skin, it doesnt look like its leaking ie no sooty marks etc. this noise does alter on and off throttle etc.
if this is the case you can get a grinder and remove the outer skin, weld up the inner and replace/reweld the outer back on, or replace.

failing that check all the pulleys including the main crank pulley for seizing bearings or lateral movement.
