Smoking Bongo 2.5 diesel 1997

Post by Ryan S » Mon Mar 26, 2018 1:03 pm

Hello all I am really hoping someone can help me, my Bongo is smoking on everystart up, smoke appears for roughly 2 minutes then disappears, after lots of intense reading I have replaced glow plugs and glow plug relay, I have also chucked in some injector cleaner with no joy, I have had the fuel pump timing checked also which seems to be fine, I believe this is fuel related, I am not a mechanic but have learnt a lot since owning this vehicle any tips or advice would be much appreciated, I have been told by a mechanic that it is likely injectors, as these are pricey I would like to check any other possible causes first.
Thanks!

Whiteish greyish smoke? Air in fuel? Front diesel pump seal? Allan.

Indeed it’s white/greyish, is there anyway test that can be done to check the seal externally? Or if I remove the pump is it a painful job? I have plenty of patience for such a task but I don’t want too push my luck too much with it. Unfortunately it is not allowing me to upload a photo. Thankyou for replying :)

on start up only then clears is a clue to it being the cold start solenoids.
does it only happen during a cold start and ok on start up when warm.
the 2 cold starts operate as follows. AIRCON OFF, THIS IS IMPORTANT. the first one kicks in if the coolant is below 10deg c then turns off at 10degc, then the second one kicks in from 10 deg to about 50deg c then turns off, when its deemed to be warmed up.

click on these links and have a good read.

Hmmm. My cold start solenoid doesnt work but i have no starting issues.

To the OP- just to be clear, this is smoke and no steam involved. Your coolant level is not dropping?

Thankyou I will have a good read this evening :D , I have no coolant loss, definitely smoke, I am going to investigate the pump seals this weekend and get them changed, as now I know where the pump is I believe I had seen some sort of fluid on engine block which is now making me hope it is the pump seals. I will update as I go along with this investigation.

You can get a full set of pump seals, gaskets etc from the Bongoland Shop, see https://bongoland.co.uk/product/diesel-pump-repair-kit/

Just out of interest does that kit apply to a facelift 1999 bongo?

No, it's for early series 1 & 2 Bongos only.

I've not tracked one down. But that doesn't mean they are not available. If you have the Bosch number for the later edition pump I'll have another look.

Cold start/glow plugs working correctly?
We love our rusty Bongo "Billy", despite his many faults!
