Ok. Here goes....

Apparently I have a worn universal joint at the rear prop shaft, which has caused the bearings to fall out. Causing the vibrations.

Garage has advised me to look for a second hand rear prop shaft and some near side rear half shaft gaskets (so they can fix the leaky rear differential at the same time).

Does that mean anything to anyone...? #-o :D

Well that is a good result at least you know what it is now.
Can they not fit a new UJ to the old shaft or is it to far gone?
The gaskets, if paper, can be cut from a bit of gasket paper or a corn flakes box.
Kellogs though, to maintain the quality.

Ha ha

I'm Scottish. Nothing but porridge oats here.....

I did ask the question about replacing the universal joint and bearings but the mechanic seems to think I'd be better off replacing the whole lot.

Can I get the gaskets from the shop?

I think Ian can get pretty much whatever you need. If its not listed give him a ring.

A wee bit closer to home, the last time I looked they had 6/7 bongos breaking for spares.

When the mechanic said the vehicle required "near side rear half shaft gaskets " is there a possibility that they meant Oil Seals?.

Thanks guys.

4WD rear propshaft ordered from bongo spares - arriving today :D

I did some digging and it is indeed the rear diff seals I need, not gaskets. I have ordered them from the shop.

Hopefully back on the road next week all being well.

Cheers and thanks again for help.

PS NB I mentioned about the diff breathers and will re-iterate when dropping off the seals. Cheers.

Got the Bongo back today. New rear prop shaft fitted (from Bongo Spares). He showed me the old one - the end was all split, no bearings left and about to totally break free! Just in the nick of time and all that.

Also had rear half shaft seals fitted (from the Bongo shop), new rear brake pipe and the diff oil filled up.

She sounds lovely again and driving really smooth :D
Just a £250 hole in my wallet to worry about now #-o
