Coil Light & Roof Light Flashing - Help

Post by laurasidestreet » Wed May 03, 2017 4:01 pm

Hi

We have had our beloved Bongo for just short of a year, she is pretty old - I think a 97 model but in very good condition and we have
been looking after her - in fact just last week replaced the bumper, had a wheel arch repaired and a door re-sprayed

When we bought her the roof light flashes while driving although it is completely closed and this has not caused any issues. Then the drivers
do stoped opening from the outside, I think something has just gone in the lock of that door.

BUT this week the coil light flashes constantly while driving and the central locking has stopped working.
I know nothing about cars & while I am happy to keep her going I am terrified of something really expensive needing to be done as I have just booked for an underseal.

Could anyone please shed some light on why the coil is flashing constantly and would this have something to do with the central locking also stoped working this week? It drives absolutely fine so not sure what to do
I have a garaged near me who does the services but doesn't do electrics so not sure who to take her to

The Glowplug light (coil) flashes to indicate that the ECU is reporting a fault, this can be read out from the diagnostic connector block under the passenger side. It might be something very simple or more complex but it will give a pointer to the problem either see this document in the factsheets http://igmaynard.co.uk/download/diagnostics.pdf or this web site http://www.philmcfadden.co.uk/MazdaDiagnosticBox.htm or take it to a Bongo savvy garage that know how to read the diagnostics!

The flashing roof lights indicates that the limit switches on the roof (two of them in the down position) are not being operated for some reason;
See this link http://www.g8dhe.net/bongo_images/aft/index.php to some pictures that might help, it maybe simply that the switch is not being operated they have been known to get out of adjustment and a tweak of the metal strip can resolve the problem.

Hi Laura.

If you pop a rough location in your profle we can likely recommend a garage near you. Not your post code, but nearest big town or corner of a county.

Goeff, could both lights flashing be the alernator playing up? Wouldn't explain the roof light flashing first, though.

Welcome aboard. :D

My roof light has flashed for the 11 years I've had my Bongo. Faulty roof microswitch and I've never got round to mending it (a tricky job). Sounds like you've got a decent old Bongo that's understandably experiencing a few age related issues. A good Bongo garage might be the best for looking at it. Rust is the big one to look out for on a Bongo of that age and undersealing, though great, can't undo what's done and may complicate welding work. Again, a garage familiar with Bongos would know where to look and be able to inspect and advise. Get any welding done before undersealing, to reduce fire risk whilst welding.

No, low battery volts or alternator charging won't cause a regular flashing of any of the lights. Random intermittent flashing might be down to a battery connection but that's about all.

Are you thinking about the Sediment light, usually when the Alternator goes Ts Up.

I live just outside of Cardiff - does anyone know somewhere I could take it? It's my main vehicle and used most days so nervous to be driving it with the coil flashing continuously

Thanks Geoff - going to try and find somewhere that knows Bongos. Fingers crossed it's something simple

as already said the coil light flashing means that the ecu is picking up an electrical gremlin somewhere, and as you say the locking is playing up etc i would start by checking the wiring loom from the drivers door to the body, constant use often breaks one or more of the wires, this can feed back via the ecu and chucks up your light.
