Clogger good luck in your quest for a bongo, was reluctant to advice you of Keighley dealer, but you found out for yourself that they seem a little dubious

Since you mentioned mileage -- in my opinion, mileage on the clock is not especially important for vehicles that have been driven in Japan for 10 years or so. I lived in Japan for a year in 2000-2001, and also lived in Tokyo for 2 yrs in the 1980s. Cars that have come from urban areas of the main island can potentially have a lot of 'idling' running time on them. This is mostly from sitting in traffic, but the Japanese also often have a habit of taking a nap in the car with the engine running and a/c on. It's a shame that hours of running time is not recorded as it is for boat engines.

In the middle-class Japanese neighbourhood where I lived, bongos (but more often toyota estimas) were a status or lifestyle symbol. Due to this, people made sure that their car looked new, even when it wasn't. This care does not necessarily extend to mechanical issues... so for buying a bongo, I think the test drive is the most important thing. Make sure it doesn't feel knackered. Steering should be fairly tight, and the bongo should move pretty quick when you step on the accelerator. Test drive more than one vehicle -- and good luck -- these are very loveable vehicles.

update time
went and had a nosey
not to bad needs a good clean as they all seem to do when they`ve been shipped over.well the ones i have looked at

went for it`s mot so it can get registered it failed boo
not to bad though bulb/wipers/a bush and 2 rear droplink arms
guy was upfront about all this said parts were on on order and should be there today yippee

he did say that on the way to the mot it overheated again he has it booked into a garage to sort it out
i am hoping it`s just an airlock /stuck thermostat which seems to be a common problem with it been stuck on a boat/dock yard/forecourt not been used,
we will see if all goes to plan next weekend is d-day +0

Make sure it's not over heating before you hand over the cash. Or you'll be posting on here more times then Mikeonb4c ;)

I have to agree with that, needs to take Bongo for a long test drive to check all is well, Peterborough to Bradford is a bit of a trek to return for any problems

Be careful clogger. There's a lot of nice Bongos out there dying to find a new home - some nice ones on BF just now. I wouldnt rush into the Peterborough one. Thanks for the jibe Ozric - knew I could rely on you dude 8) But seriously, asking lots of questions on BF has steered me around a whole heap of trouble. I dont regret any of it (though you guys might!)

Dude, it seems like a lot of trouble before you start. I bought my bongo for 7k nearly two years ago and its an R reg that was spotless, with a rear kitchen and front bull bars/spots. i have since seen better than mine cheaper. im not sure what your budget is and maybe thats the issue. I took mine for a 100 point inspection to a local garage by the dealer (competitor) which cost £100. Worth every penny imho. He found that the tyres were barely legal and it hadnt been serviced as the garage I was buying had stated, other than that he said it was a nice motor and good buy.
Dont jump in dude as I know its hard to resist when you really want one. I saw some terrible Bongs out there, some just dirty ones and some very nice ones all for similar prices. Dealers dont seem to have a great way of pricing these except for finger in the air so the are some bargains out there.
Goodluck.

yep i know

dealer has just been in touch with me this morning
even admitted he had messed up the bleeding of the coolant
even said it is booked in at his local garage to make sure there`s no damage etc etc
as he said if it ain`t sorted you don`t get it fair enough
it`s costing 4k he is giving me a very good deal on my trade in
it is in very nice condition on the exterior black over silver
interior is not mint but he is fully valeting it but will clean up very well
it is to me gonna be a working van most of the time but will act as a camper when i need it
it will be filled with russian/ukranian bikes and spares that i bring back from my jaunts to poland/ukraine so is gonna get scuffed about inside
and about 3500/4000mile trips there back takes us about 14 days with plenty sightseeing on the way.
added bonus is the roof van filled up me kipping in the roof.
plus gotta bongo friendly garage in huddersfield i believe if worst happens

watch this space

Cool, as long as you are getting a deal and eyes wide open. I just wanted to give you a comparison. BTW as the Japanese dont salt their roads most of these vehicles are spotless and rust free regardless of age. Get it waxoiled as soon as possible as there is very little protection underneath and it will soon rust up. It will cost you up to £100 but worth every penny.
