the site selling the solenoid pack suggests a gasket will be required.
this may not be so.
Remove sump carefully the gasket may remain intact on one surface.
the 2ce i've changed my oil it has done.
A non setting gasket gunge like hermatite gold (no longer available sadly) is preferred
the last time i used something from halfords (not going out to the shed now)

Hello and happy new year to to all :D
You are right that it seems like a simple project . I'm assuming that the valve bodies are at the bottom of the gearbox and the solenoids are behind them ?
I'm afraid I'll need a new gasket as the sump has already got a sealer applied, either way what sealer would people recommend for the application ?
I'll be using new ATF but is it a good idea maybe to use an gearbox oil conditioner as well and if so is there a preferred bongo brand :D
Sorry for all the questions but I'm anxious to do the best job I can :oops:

The old gunge may be removable with petrol, meths or aerosol solvents sold as carb cleaner,brake cleaner.
The carb cleaner is good for cleaning EGR valves and the like.

The shed called again, the stuff i used last time was Loctite mr5922. It seals a treat, but , i dont know how easy it is to remove.
ps I hate silicones, bane of my life at work.

You need to be very careful if you use sealant on Auto box sumps (for obvious reasons) a wee smear of ATF should be more than enough, that is the reason why the experts advise to fit new gasket.

That's a good tip re the carb cleaner , I'll be using that !
I'll be hoping to get a new gasket as you said tennal as I'm not a huge sealer fan .... could this have been part of the problem ? Hope not [-X

I might have missed it ..but what exactly is the problem apart from the hold light bulb flashing? IE does the vehicle go into "Limp " mode or no overdrive / lock up.

To be honest the bus drives fine , I just dont like the idea of the hold light flashing , Crusing is 60MPH and 2250 RPM .
I'm assuming that it is a warning of something more serious though ?
The diagnosis said that it was the solenoids so I was going with that

Quite so. I dont know how "intelligent" the Bongo system is but it may be that current draw is outside of specs so putting up the light.
I would go with swopping out the solenoids first.
Having said that have you tried clearing the codes and see if they return?

We are both thinking along the same lines as i do intend to replace the solenoid pack , I haven't clear the codes because I don't know how to ( I know , numpty :lol: :lol: ) , could I ask you how it's done ?
By the way nice work on the restoration , the work is excellent !

Sorry, I am a numpty too on this one,I have never done it on the diesel.
:(
I used a scan tool on my Aero not sure if it would work on the diesel didnt think to try before the strip down. :oops:
However I am sure some one on here knows how to do it via the socket.
I should have said the solenoid replacement would be after checking for dodgy connections etc as suggested previously.

As stated already the flashing HOLD light indicates a fault with the transmission ELECTRICAL system only, it cannot detect any mechanical issues with such a crude system.

1st thing to do is check the external wiring to the transmission solenoids (not to be confused with the range (inhibitor) switch) for any damage/corroded connectors BEFORE getting inside the gearbox itself as your codes are telling you there is an issue with the solenoid CIRCUITS - the circuit starts inside the gearbox computer & ends at the solenoid, so the fault can be anywhere along the way. It is unusual (but not impossible) for two solenoids to suddenly fail, typically more like wiring damage/corrosion. If it is the solenoid pack then the valvebody will need to be removed as I am sure these mount to the upper side of the v/b. I believe the valvebody has gaskets - if these break the valvebody will need to be stripped down to replace them, not something I suggest someone without auto transmission experience attempts.

DO NOT smear the pan gasket with ATF as previously advised, especially if your replacement is cork/rubber (it will just squeeze out & break when you tighten the bolts). The 'cardboard' type gasket as per original fitment has a 'glue' impregnated into it which also will be negated by the application of ATF. Both surfaces should be bone dry & make sure the sump is flat, dressing down with a ball pein hammer if (as is common) it has been over tightened causing it to bulge up around the bolt holes.

We can supply both styles of pan gaskets & solenoid sets as well if needed.

As it happens I'm hoping to have it seen to by a local mechanic tomorrow , I'm afraid that I' do most / all the work on my cars but I don't have a lift nor the confidence / skills for this job :D I've waited this long as he is the only person locally that I'd trust with this type of job :shock: he is not a gearbox speciaist like yourself but he only works on merc's and BMW's so I'm hoping he knows what's what .
I will tell him what you said though if you don't mind .
I've got a solenoid pack and gasket from Mazdabongo .com but thank you for your offer , I also supplied new ATF so it all will be nice and fresh again :D
I do really hope that's it's only a loose wire / bad connection on the outside but we will see , I'd check it now myself but I've left the bus over to him AHHHHHH
