Hi All,
I'm after a bit of advice about my auto gearbox.
Drove it home from the station after picking up the wife, about a 16 mile round trip, and the gearbox was hunting or would have the effect of a clutch slipping. Got it home but it was dark so i couldn't see anything wrong. Went to check the oil level the other day so i started the van and left it to warm up. Went to drive it off my driveway onto the road and nothing happened, In D revved engine, no movement. So i pulled the dipstick and it was dry. Looked underneath and saw a drip from pipes that go to the cooler, The big long ones. That will be reason the gearbox was not functioning but what i would like to know is, is it likely i have done any damage to the box?
Also, I'm assuming the gearbox is now empty but will it be completely empty? Will there still be oil in the torque convertor or will it have pumped out when i left it running on the drive. I've been looking around for effective methods of flushing out the oil but I'm thinking that most of it will be gone so i should just need to fill it up with fresh oil. I'll remove the sump and clean the filter as i don't know when it was last done. How much oil will i need to refill the gearbox?
I'm hoping its a case of replacing the pipes then refilling!!

You normally need about 4.5l to replace the oil in the sump. Total capacity is 7 or 7.5l
Worth cleaning the filter whilst the oil has been conveniently drained! You'll need a new sump gasket. When refitting go gently and evenly.

If you have trouble obtaining a new set of pipes they are stocked in the Bongoland shop, see http://bongoland.co.uk/product/atf-pipe ... ol-bongos/

Re: Auto Gearbox Advice
I used some of this to replace my metal pipes
Tie wrapped to the old leaking pipe and 2 jubilee clips
Job done
I'd flush your box out and clean the filter
What oil is left in there is going to be toasted

Thanks for the replies.
So what is the best way to flush out what is left?
Should i fill it up then run it and bleed some oil out via the cooler pipe then keep doing this until i just get clean oil or is there a different method i should use. I've read about flushing the gearbox this way but thats from a known quantity. I don't know how much oil will be left in there, I can only assume its probably empty as it was sitting running on my drive for 10 mins with oil pouring out from the corroded pipe. If thats the case would i get away with just filling up or is it worth filling, running, emptying then refilling again to flush out any particles that may be in there.
Thanks again for the help.

Re: Auto Gearbox Advice
I'd fill it run it
Make sure box is working
Drop sump
Pore some through it
Clean filter
And then refill
Some have reused gasket but it depended how it comes off
For the pipes I think you will find the only corroded bit is the exposed bit under drivers seat
The rest of mine were nice and clean
You can just cut off the last foot or so of pipe and replace the old hose and rusty pipe with one length of new braded hose

Re: Auto Gearbox Advice
You need to have the Leak Repaired, then fill to the recommended level. Road test the vehicle, if OK I would then think about flushing and Renewing filter etc.
Good Luck.
