Spare wheel removal

Hi folks,

I have a full size wheel to replace the space saver, can you remove the spare without the long rod that i see on ebay? I have the flatter handle looking part, but not the rod.

Any help appreciated. I shall buy a rod if not, but would rather not!

Don't think you can.
As the rod is guided to a cable winding winch.

It is a very simple design

Given the considerable skills creativity and craftsmanship you have shown

Would imagine you can create something

Important elements
Diameter of the rod. To fit though the bumper hole
Length to reach the mechanism

Then the flat part at the end.

Which given you have acsess to a cutter and a welder you can make it yourself.

Pm me and I will be happy to pictures of mine against a tape measure to allow you to fabricate one.

Seems little you don't seem to be able to make

Agree with David.

You could drill through one end of some round bar and put a pin through to fit the winch end then weld a nut on the other end so you coukd turn it with a socket/rachet or the wheel brace.

Don't over tighten when winding up or you can deform the floor.

And the breakers often have them, BUT - have you checked the 'roof' of the side door cubby?

They're often clipped up there.

Who'd have thunk it, given how much of the van i have dissected, that i never noticed it in it's intended position!

Changed the wheel today, what a fantastic system that is! Mental Mazda!

Word of warning DON'T wind up the cable without a wheel being in place, the loose cable can overlap itself and tangle making it impossible to lower without removing the entire mechanism .... If you put the replaced wheel in the van, then just tie up the extended cable under the rear bumper!

Sounds like you may have experienced this!
Luckily i put the "new" wheel straight under there, so didn't have the misfortune of what you describe.

Why did Mazda not fit a full size spare if there is space for it? You'd think the cost of producing the space saver is greater than producing an extra full size steel wheel.
