TWO YEARS & 65K -TIMING BELT

Post by ELZE » Wed Oct 19, 2016 8:01 pm

When I got the van I had the timing belt and full gubbins done but after all this mileage in quick succession should I get the belt done again or is it too soon?

I had heard quotes of 80,000 miles or three years which ever comes first?

maybe next year ?

Its best practice to change the rollers and tensioner/s as well rather than just the belt,

Indeed. I'd hope that is standard practice?

Sadly,not always.
When we are asked " how much to change the cam belt" we explain that our price is for the full kit, water pump too if driven off the cam belt, and why these should be fitted.
We have lost out to other garages on a few occasions when estimating for belt changes, in some cases we are told "the other garage can do it for a lot less than you are asking!" despite having given an explanation we don`t get the job. :(

Our labour rate is higher than others around here but there is not that much in it and we run to book times on fitting so the only place I can see there being a 60-70 pound saving is on the parts and the quality.
It may well last for a good few thousand miles but if/when something lets go it can be catastrophic but by then its likely out of warranty.

On a V6 the cam belt change to say the least is a nightmare of a job. AVA leisure who have a lot of experience in the job say to allow 7hrs to replace the belt & tensioners etc. Having 2 V6 vans cam belt changes are an expensive job with labour rates what they are. Having belts done every 5 years when factored in to running costs in general make running the van quite expensive. Must say that it makes running the diesel seem more attractive. What's more, because of the design of the vehicle belt changes on the V6 need to be done with the vehicle up in the air on a lift. From what I can see from other posts here it is at least a DIY job on the diesel if you have good mechanical skills.
My last belt change included all front end oil seals, water pump, rollers & tensioners. Plus all of the ancillary belt tensions & belts. Parts alone where £800 & the labour from my friendly garage £350. At least the next belt change should only require the belt kit so would be lower cost as belt kits with tensioner/rollers are reasonable at around £80 & the labour make it a more realistic price.

Strange that people would waste money on a cambelt change without a new tensioner as opposed to invest in a cambelt change with a new tensioner, especially as i'd thought both were recommended to be changed at the same intervals. There's nowt sa queer as folk

Yes the v6 versus diesel running costs thing is interesting Windy. I reminded myself of it when my uber reliable diesel nonetheless needed a new head a couple of years back. For economy of running costs the 2 litre petrol seems to have the edge, if you can live with the duller driving experience.
