Hello there
Our Bongo 2004 Petrol 2.0L engine stopped while driving. Engine check light came on when it happened. Breakdown recovery to get home. Have since checked the coil, ignition module and capacitor - seem okay. Engine cranks but will not start. There's no spark from the plug cables. Distributor cap looks okay inside.
Any ideas for testing the reluctance sensor(?) inside the distributor?
Don't really know what to try next. Can anybody offer any advice please?
Thanks for taking the time.

Is the engine spinning over as normal or faster .. Have you checked you have compression .. have you checked if the cam belt as snapped ..??

Don't know if the sudden cutting out symptoms fit with crankshaft position sensor but maybe keep that on the list of possibles and google that engine type to see if any record of problems.

Is there a spark at the HT lead?
Distributor caps have a habit of looking fine but aren't...

How exactly have you checked the coil & ignition module ? Is there a spark coming from the coil ?
Can you hear the fuel pump priming ? Have you checked all the fuses ?

I had exactly the same problem 2 yrs ago on my 2ltr bongo.
Low loader to Wheelquick, and it transpired it was some sort of electric sensor in the distributor. Sorted within an hour.

Thanks to all for taking the time and trouble to post some very useful advice and suggestions. Plenty of food for thought.
Worked through them all before posting again, if they'd not been tried already.
Discovered the distributor was not actually rotating when the engine was cranked.
It was a broken cam-belt, as suggested by mikeWalsall.
Although we might have attempted the job ourselves having done so on our previous Japanese import, we opted to send it to our nearby trusted garage instead - Honiton MOT Centre. They're grey import friendly and we've used them for a number of years.
We're now back on the road again.
This being our first Bongo, it's very reassuring to know that there are fellow Bongo owners out there willing to help and advise us beginners!
Genuine thanks once more to you all.
