Ignition key stuck in lock

Post by banjoboy1 » Fri Feb 26, 2016 7:59 am

My ignition key can't be removed from ignition barrel .It happened the same some time ago when after all sorts of jiggling and moving the lever in and out of parking etc after leaving it for a couple of hours or so it pulled out normally??.This time it seems to be stuck permanently. What sort of issues can cause this? The key turns normally to start but obviously it is a security problem.

This sounds like a problem with the cable. I've copied this from a similar problem reported elsewhere on the Forum by New Forest Terrier.

"The ignition system, park button on the gear stick, and and parking brake are linked via a cable. This is probably either displaced or damaged at the gear lever or ignition end. To get at the gear lever end take of the center console and then you can see the underside of the gear lever. There are two cables, thick one on the passenger side for the gear change, thin one on the drivers side. The cable may be damaged or snagged."

Thanx for this info it may be relevant. This morning went out to Bongo and the key came out normally after trying all afternoon yesterday.Thing I noticed was that the key was now in the fully off position whereas yesterday it was not.It does seem as though it is a problem when it is warm. Can't think why that would be but next time it happens I will investigate the cables issue mentioned.

Hi Banjoboy, Did you have the issue of the key stuck in the ignition again? Did you find a fix for it. I am having the same problem, and like you it happens when the car is warm. Whatever I try to get the key out (take out the room fuse, wiggle ignition wires, ensure gear select is in park, etc) does not work, but when I try to take the key out the next day (once it has cooled down), it comes out first time... Anyone else have any ideas ... cheers.

The heat thing may be irrelevant, if the cable is sticky it could just take a while to slowly release. My old Maxi had a choke cable that did this, if I released the knob it would really really slowly release.

Seems a bit more logical to me than it being a hot or cold engine causing it, I could be wrong of course!

Thx Jimbobvfr400 for your response, next time it happens I will check the cable at the gear lever and see If wiggle the cable will release it.
