Cambelt/water pump?

Post by Dr Fingers » Mon May 16, 2016 1:16 pm

Coming up to a cambelt change @100k miles in our 95 diesel. As far as I know, the water pump is original. Would now be a good time to replace it? I'm no mechanic, but would it be easier to do when they're 'in there' for the cambelt?

Many thanks

it would make some sense to do it at the same time. and i would.

BUT

doing the cam belt doesnt involve going into the water system, where doing the water pump does, the water pump should be done if you dont know its age, and i would recommend doing it at least as often as the cam belt if not earlier when you change the coolant depending on coolant colour, blue 2 year, red 5 year. (but hardly anyone does this on time on a bongo).

make sure the garage knows this and is able to do a bleed, whichever way they choose to do it.

if your going to do the pump, is this the time to also do the hose inspection, rad inspection, stat change, temp and fan switch change, maybe even a rad change as part of good preventative maintenance.

just chucking this one in there, never heard of a diesel bongo cam belt snapping, but have heard of lots of water pumps leaking. #-o #-o .

didnt you have a new fuel pump fitted some time ago.

Yup, had a new/recon diesel pump fitted. Expensive, but it transformed the van. New Radiator/hoses/thermostat etc etc have been done over the past 4 years, but water pump is an unknown quantity. Van is running beautifully, just want to keep her that way!

i thought you had a pump done, i would have thought that would have been a good time to do the belt, but get the water pump done sooner rather than later as these leaking are hard to see and diagnose mate, mine went after a 9 mile blast down the motorway with no warning, came out from work and luckily my haydn alarm told me there was no coolant left in the system after it had spent all day emptying itself whilst in work.
