V6 Cambelt any other business?

Post by wildrobot » Tue May 03, 2016 11:30 am

Hello so i'm getting the Cambelt on my V6 done. I've had varying quotes (all from Bongo specialists) from "Sorry i won't do that job to £580"!

The best quote i've had so far is £263 including VAT in Bristol which isn't far from me

I just wondered though is it worth having anything else done at the same time? i've seen seals mentioned on other threads.

Many thanks

Yes the cam oil seals whilst they are at the front of the engine! Normal price for a V6 cam belt and oil seals is £400-£600 depends mainly on manhour costs rather than parts as its a pig to get too!

As Geoff has said, plus get the mechanic to test the tensioners in particular the "Hydraulic Tensioner" also the water pump for bearing wear or signs of seepage, and drive belts.

Ok thankyou for your suggestions

So rather than just getting them to fit a water pump check it out first, that makes sense

Depending on how long your intending to own the van. If you're going to have the van for a number of years and want trouble free motoring then have all of the front end of the engine done. As said it's a pig of a job and labour makes up a big part of the bill. So have the cam and crank oil seals done as they will leak at some time in the life of the engine. Also have the cambelt tensioners replaced as well, you can get a cam belt kit that comes with a set of the required ones. Yes get the water pump done to as this will the only time it will be cheap to have done during the belt change.
also get the garage to check all of the auxiliary belt tensioners as mine where getting past it with noisy bearings. Makes it a bigger expense but well worth it.
