Reverse camera wire

Hi folks,
I'm currently playing around with a reversing camera for the van and looking at a a different wiring so that it comes on automatically.
My question is this; is the reverse light wiring in the gearstick area or is it located at the gearbox? I need to run a wire from the stereo head unit to the reverse light, but obviously would rather pick up as near a point as possible as opposed to running a wire front to back!

Its on the switch of the gear lever, and several other places!
