Before I disconnected the battery I was getting a series of flashes...
6 medium speed
6 slow speed
4 fast speed

I then disconnected the battery (and purged using brake pedal) which cleared all codes.
I had to drive around until I got the flashing hold light again with the diagnostics still attached I then go...
6 medium speed
6 medium speed
recurring

Question is: -
Do I take notice of the code (possibly 64, 3-2 timing solenoid valve) before the disconnection, or
Code 6 - Vehicle speed sensor (already replaced, old one had lower voltage than newer one tried but hasn't fixed the problem), or
Code 66 - Line pressure solenoid valve?
...
In your second test, since you are only getting flashes of the same length, they must either be "tens" or "digits", not both. You describe them as medium length so I suggest they are tens and you are reading code 60.

Can't match up your first test, maybe a dodgy connection in your test setup?
I wonder how it treats multiple errors? This is not described in the help info.

Was definitely getting 3 codes as detailed before I did the power reset. As CMM says, I wonder how it deals with multiple fault codes, or even redundant fault codes after fixing but not resetting?
Bearing in mind the VSS (#06) has been replaced, does this mean anything to anyone?

Thank you, great help :) That makes total sense as 06 has already been replaced and the main difficulty is the shift from 1st to 2nd.

Now just to find out the part number and I can get it ordered!
jimmo62 wrote:If you can get the codes and post here I can look up in the Mazda Bongo workshop manual which should be the definitive reference, I think the link I posted is a general Mazda one but does at least show how to get the codes out. Let us know if you can get the codes....
Thanks Jimmo, would you be able to look up the 1-2 shift solenoid valve, fault code 60 ?

You have changed the sensor, but the code refers to the whole circuit not just the sensor. The circuit starts in the ECU & ends at with the sensor. So the 06 code could be sensor wiring or ECU - the latter being unlikely on a Bongo.

I believe, if the same as other vehicle with flash codes it will flash a code, followed by a pause, then the next code & so on until it repeats itself when multiple codes are present.

Thanks again.
Here is the current code flashing... https://youtu.be/HE-HZUuWI8E
Forgive me if i am getting this wrong but it doesn't match the timings as stated on the diagnostics info for length of flashes.

The first time(before purging old codes) there were 3 speeds of flashes, the one in this video (of my current fault code flashing) would be the medium speed.

Main question is whether this is #06 (Vehicle speed sensor, changed, although could be wiring etc) or
#60 (1st-2nd shift solenoid valve, which fits with the fault)

I suppose before ordering new parts, first should check the wiring and whole circuit that contains relevant part.
Initially garage replaced some wiring so could indeed be that!

What year is your vehicle? The flashing codes used to be only readable using an LED/Lamp on earlier versions, then later the actual Hold lamp flashed the code when strapped and then later still the 2 digit codes were replaced with 4 single digit sequences when OBDII compatibility was brought in.
The Factsheet in the members area describes some of the codes

and the others are in the http://www.philmcfadden.co.uk/MazdaDiagnosticBox.htm link

Thanks Geoff
It's a 1997, 19 years old this week!
I've been referring to the last link and imo getting some sequences that don't match.

That, to me, is code 6. No question. It also fits with your driving symptoms.

Many thanks Alacricity.
The garage did replace this, after finding a lower voltage on the Vehicle Speed Sensor already fitted, than the one I got sent from UK as a replacement.

They garage also replaced / reconnected / repaired some wiring in the loom under the passenger seat which was partially damaged.
This leads me to believe that they didn't do a good job of that, so will get them to check that again.

Would you rule out it being code 60 - 1st to 2nd shift solenoid at this stage?

I wouldn't think so. I would imagine code 60 would put the transmission into permanent default i.e thumping into D or R & driving in 3rd (I think) all the time.

As said earlier your symptoms fit with speed sensor.

Thanks Alacrity.
Ordered a new sensor to see if it resolves the problem. Will also get them to check wiring.
It appears there were 2 sensors (one has already been changed) and after the garage checked we found mine doesn't have the one specified on the Lush Projects schematic.

Hi, Sorry to tag onto the end of this thread, its just that I have followed the thread to try and determine why my Hold light is flashing on my '96 Bongo with auto-transmission. Loads of great info here, thanks.

I have a problem tho, after jumpering the TAT and GND pins on the Diagnostics connector, my HOLD light looks to be flashing an error code of '36', which doesn't seem to be a valid code according to Phil McFaddens info-sheet.

I may be reading the flashing code wrong so I've recorded it at http://youtu.be/N69eCl6d41Q

I'd be very grateful if anyone could take a look and offer a second opinion.
And if the consensus is that it is '36', would anyone have an explanation for that code ?

Thanks, any help appreciated,
David

No problem with jumping on :)
I'd say that's a 36 as well so I'm confused too.
Not renewed my BF membership yet bit as someone said earlier there is info in the members area that they provided links to, maybe those have an answer?

Unfortunately not. Ended up getting breakdown company to take back to UK.
Got a new gearbox fitted, still didn't fix it.
I then released the wires that had burnt and supposedly been repaired and redone another 3 times. This appear to have done the trick, simply untaping the bundle of wires, so thinking it was a something not connected properly on wiring to speed sensor or not contacting when bundled. Only driven it a handful of times since as I bought a new car after all the hassle. I am however about to return to UK and attempt a European road trip with the Bongo so I hope to hell it really is fixed.

Jeebers what a tale. Glad its now fixed and hope it stays fixed for you. Just shows what can happen - i'd need to re-read the whole thread to remember how you came to have burnt/bundled wires that had allegedly been redone three times :-k
