Engine cutting out
Hi guys, i'm hoping someone can give me an idea of what is causing my bongo to cut out. Basically when the fuel gauge goes below 1/3 of a tank, the revs drop to the point the engine cuts out. It then takes a few turns to start again. However its not as straight forward that, as when I have been driving for a while and the fuel gauge goes down below 1/3 during that Journey, its fine.
Any ideas
Thanks

Re: Engine cutting out
Maybe fuel problems
Dirt at bottom of tank
I'd clean banjo filter if diesel and blow down fuel hose into tank as also another filter there
Replace the normal fuel and air filters
And see how that goes
What engine do you have
Leaky fuel pump o rings
Could be loads of things
Start with above if diesel I'd say

Re: Engine cutting out
Thanks Gasy, I only just seen this reply, its now in the garage for them to sort it out
, so fingers crossed they'll find the issue, if not I'll be back
Thanks for help though.

Re: Engine cutting out
Have you tried the usual suspects....the fuel filler cap/try running the vehicle with it Off.
Check the tank unit filter is clean and attached .
Good Luck

Re: Engine cutting out
What engine type is it, we assume diesel but it might well be a petrol ?

Hi Its a diesel, the garage have found that the seals are leaking on the fuel pump and they think that it might be those. Does that sound plausible?
Thanks

Re: Engine cutting out
its possible, but ask the garage to exhaust the cheaper things first before doing the pump as it can be expensive to replace.
check the fuel filter and the banjo filter in the top of the pump.
make sure its not bad fuel, theres a lot of it about.
as said try it with the fuel cap off or loose, see if this helps as there are several tank breathers on the system. does it do it when its been running a while or from cold??.

It mainly does it when the fuel is low, losses revs and engine cuts out.Northern Bongolow wrote:its possible, but ask the garage to exhaust the cheaper things first before doing the pump as it can be expensive to replace.

The seals were changed by the garage but the problem is still there. They are telling me that they have put something on the pump to check if it is pumping and it isn't, so i need a new pump. They've filled it up with fuel for me, so I could take it, as it works ok when fuel is in there. The garages explanation for this was that the pump doesn't need to be working when the fuel is high enough.
Is there something that could be stopping the pump working or do I need a new pump?
Thanks
Leonne
Re: Engine cutting out
Assuming they checked filter and banjo filter. Fuel pipes are normally pretty robust but could be worth checking that they are in good condition and joints are all solid. Thinking that a collapsing pipe would increasingly restrict the flow as the fuel tank level lowered and the pump has to suck harder. Also a leaky joint would let increasingly more air in to the fuel as suck increased. I would have thought though that either of these would show symptoms when under heavy load (e.g. accelerating hard or motorway speeds) irrespective of tank level but I'm guessing.
I'm not sure if this would work but would it be possible to try sucking fuel using an oil extractor connected to a pipe near the fuel pump? (Syringe type available from screwfix for a tenner)

Re: Engine cutting out
I'm wondering if they are perhaps misunderstanding the diesel Bongo fuel system. Unlike a more modern car, there is no in-tank pump so it relies entirely on the injector pump to draw the fuel all the way from the tank. I wouldn't have thought having extra diesel in the tank would make any difference to the amount of suck you will get injector pump. Some folk have fitted an electric inline pump to help the IP along slightly. Certainly cheaper than £400+ for a recon IP.changeinminds wrote:They are telling me that they have put something on the pump to check if it is pumping and it isn't, so i need a new pump. Is there any cons to that method and any idea how much roughly that costs?Simon Jones wrote: Some folk have fitted an electric inline pump to help the IP along slightly. Certainly cheaper than £400+ for a recon IP.

It's not me I'm afraid. A few mentions of fitting an electric pump here:

Re: Engine cutting out
Is it possible that the fuel pump is struggling to pull fuel when tank fuel level is lower and it has to be raised further? Some owners have suggested/surmised that eben fuel pump seals are leaky, air can get drawn into tbe system by reverse siphon so that the pump unprimes and the Bongo won't start. Could this happen even when engine is running?
