Still need to find out why roof light flashing so might pop it down to the garage for a once over. For peace of mind if nothing else.

In which case one of the two micro switches up at the front of the AFT runners on the roof itself is not operating, they register the position of the two sliders to ensure that the roof is fully down.

looks good really sara nice and clean round the rocker cover, no signs of the gasket gone on the exhaust, cannot really see if the no1 stud is there, but there doesnt look like there are gasses escaping cos this shows dirty around the area.
turbo looks a bit suspect, or one of the clips that hold the air pipes either in or out maybe loose. i would pop off the air pipe in,(the U shaped one in the pic) and the lower one out to the intercooler and see if there is a lot of oil about.

To check the exhaust manifold you could get someone to put the sole of their shoe over the tailpipe and someone else to listen to the engine/manifold.

As you could appreciate you need to do it for short periods at a time, it would also help if the heat shield was removed.

Update.

Had booked the van in for a once over next week, decided to give it a good clean and a long drive.

Can no longer hear the odd noise, just normal turbo noise. The times we heard it before it was wet and today is gloriously sunny and dry. Have decided to stop worrying and cancelled bongo doctors appointment.

It's a bit like when you feel rotten for a while but get miraculously cured when sitting in Drs surgery.

Have also fixed flashing roof light.

Could it have been wet/tyre/spray noise or simply the road surface reflecting more hissy sound from the engine when wet. Sounds like it. Glad you have things sorted whatever. That does not explain the burning oil smell though. Might be worth having it in consciousness for a few drives to be sure.

Yes it's possible the wet roads were to blame. I think though what we were hearing was just normal turbo noise. Probably more of a whisper than a hiss. Really hard to explain in writing.

The hot oily smell is I think oil on the exhaust. The turbo is a bit oily and the big black pipe underneath quite sticky with oil. Not losing masses of oil though. Was serviced in December, still plenty of oil in place according to the dipstick and no stains on the drive.

Will keep an eye (and a nose) on it though. Luckily have good bongo garage nearby.

The engine often smells hot and oily, it's just that I noticed it particularly near the passenger door and this combined with the "noise" put me into PARANOIA MODE. Quite a common symptom of bongo ownership I think.

In reality our Freda has been one of the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned.

My turbo and pipes looked oilier than Sara's so I remembered this post. In the middle of cooling system transplant so took a closer look. The chunky U shape air-in pipe was oily inside and the turbo spigot had oil on it. Is this a problem with the turbo? Anything easy to check?

By way of background a couple of years ago friends commented that the Bongo smokes a bit and it can sometimes be seen in following cars' headlights. I asked ADS to take a look at it a year ago who said it wasn't excessive and nothing to worry about. These guys are very much from the school of if it ain't broke don't touch.
