Which bit of a cigarette adaptor/ jacksocket is the +ve feed

Post by mikeonb4c » Wed Jan 31, 2007 6:11 pm

I've bought a TV aerial for £9.99 from Argos. It has an amplifier (which allows the TV to receive Freeview when on, but cant get Freeview when not). The aerial has a 12v CD power socket so it can be powered by a car battery. The only way I could get the necssary lead was to buy (cheap) a 12v DC main transformer pack and a cigratte socket extension lead. One of the wires coming out of the transformer jack has white and black striping on it (is this the +ve) and the other is black. HOWEVER, the wires coming out of the cig. extension lead plug are both black. The Cig. plug can be dismantled and I can solder the wires and lead that I cut off the transformer, but how do I ensure I solder them so the supply from the cig socket is correct (i.e. matches what would have come of the transformer).

Any car leccies out there able to advise? Grateful for any advice - my soldering iron is poised at the ready

Mike - on the car 12v socket, the centre is always positive. Obviously, when you plug an extension socket into it, it retains the correct polarity, ie, centre contact positive, sleeve negative. The easiest way to check you have the lead correct is a multimeter. Do you have such a beast?

Hope this helps.

Careful with 12v adapters the centre is sometimes negative. There should be a diagram somewhere on th appliance like this:

The emblem to the left, next to the CE shows the centre as positive in this case.

Mike / Dandy - what fantastic and Supreme Beings you are - with any luck that should get me on my way (but only for a bit - I'LL BE BACK).

Mike - the only multi anything I have are vitamins and purpose vehicle (as in Bongo - couldnt believe my luck but buying one imported into Ipswich meant it had MPV as the last part of its Reg No - I took that as a good omen, very Tribal 8) 8) )

Thanks again

Worked a treat folks 7 thanks again. I can now (just about) get Freeview on the move with a set top aerial mounted upside down in the skylight. Of course I cant watch it, cos I'm driving. Duhhhhhhhhhhh

Incidentally, I got 2 x really great seat back tidys with pop down trays from Halfords today @ £14.99 each. Not at all scruffy like some. Look a treat in Mango Bongo. I'll take pics of everything as soon as I get a chance and post them (curtains, TV, aerial, seat tidies etc. as requested).

But no, the real Mango Bongo is demure and discreet. Ask Mel, she met her this morning (& thanks again Mel - lovely to meet you & hope to join and other Bongoists at an NW meet when Mango is ready for her Coming Out party  )
