Central locking wierd behaviour

The central locking (CL) on Obie Bongo is acting up. the CL always only operated from the drivers door (is that standard?) and intermittently would open but not lock the passenger door. Since last week, the CL opens all the doors but does not lock them.

What could be the problem and the fix?

First guess would be drivers door wiring loom! Down at the lower corner the loom transistions from door to chassis and the constant twisting causes the wires to work harden and then snap and become intermittent.
You can repair, by unwrapping the loom and locating the broken wires, soldering etc. and then re-wrap.
or buy a new loom from the shop if there in stock....

Standard to lock/unlock only from the driver's door.

The intermitent problem is likely the loom where it passes from the 'A' pillar into the O/S door.

If you strip off the outer insulation you will likely see the damaged wire/s. Simple enough to solder in a 2/3" piece and re-insulate.

Looms can be had for £££.

This often affects window operation, too.

So I had an intermittent problem with central locking sometimes not opening all locks though (from memory) they closed OK always. Convinced that the wiring loom must be the culprit, and feeling flush and caring about my Bongo, I had a new loom fitted. But after a couple of months of no problem, it recurred a few days ago, albeit briefly. It seemed to do it when vehicle was cold/damp, and to be gone once it had been driven and warmed up. I'm wondering now if its something in the drivers door / master lock. I'd welcome suggestions on next place to look.

Yes one shouldn't eliminate the switch itself, but its not an often reported problem as such, a good clean out and spray with a contact cleaner might however be worth while trying.

Indeed Geoff, I should have made time to take the door card off and do that. Strangely though, I don't regret getting a new door loom as I reckon its best being ahead of the game there than behind it, and I log all work done as selling points if I every should decide to sell the old girl (which will be never but...)
