Sluggish Acceleration
P Reg '96 2.5L 2wd auto is very sluggish especially when going up a hill. It tends to down shift but never kicks in "a little extra". Oh, and passing another car is pretty much impossible. Had a friend come over today to help me bleed the coolant system only for him to say "oh look it does have a turbo". Seems as though the turbo is not working. We removed the lower hose and did not feel any air blowing out when we rev'd the engine as another thread on here recommended. I'm about at my wits end with this thing after only 2 weeks. Any suggestions on what to look for??
Re: Sluggish Acceleration
Hi I had the same symptoms, caused by a disconnected vacuum pipe on the drivers side.See my previous post "bit sluggish on hills" hope its that simple.

this link may help checking the usual suspects,
http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ls&start=0
failing that, take a good pic around the turbo area and the pipework to the area, then one a little wider, sometimes its easier to see stuff thats not quite right.

I have changed the fuel filter and cleaned out the banjo so far. My mate said that we should be able to see the shaft moving on the turbo while idling and revving but it does not move at all. I don't see any disconnect hoses at all. Someone also mentioned a vacuum hose under drivers seat but still didn't see anything that looks out of place...

Re: Sluggish Acceleration
Have you checked and changed your air filter recently ? I know that is a really simple one that can cause power loss as revs go upwards.
They call me light foot.

Re: Sluggish Acceleration
TPS (Throttle position sensor) gets mentioned in the link NB has given. I can recall a few incidents with Bongos that involved this, so worth keeping it on the radar screen as a possible and have a search of old threads. I think it probably affects gear changes in relation to throttle demand but symptoms could perhaps mimic those that feel like loss of power.Northern Bongolow wrote:this link may help checking the usual suspects,

have you read the performance issues thread a little lower down?

Re: Sluggish Acceleration
Just read it. Can anyone let me know what (if anything) I should be able to see the turbo doing under revs? Should I see the rod on top moving?? It almost seems as though the turbo is seized up as nothing is moving at all.petebee wrote:have you read the performance issues thread a little lower down?

Re: Sluggish Acceleration
on this thread you will see the wastegate, its at the other end of the rod that should move under vac pressure, or move when pulled with pliers.
http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ud#p418217.
on the pic of the drivers side there is a thin pipe that goes from the right hand side of the pic (the inlet manifold) to the top of the fuel pump, its about 10mm dia. this pipe should have suction on it from the inlet manifold when the engine is revved up, this operates a diaphragm in the top of the pump, check the pipe is not holed or rubbed through, make sure its not blocked with oil, some are, then remove the screws that hold the top of the pump in place where the pipe goes into the top of the pump, there is a big weakish spring then the diaphragm, this can get filled with oil this stops the diaphragm operating so reduces fuel into the pump inerds.

Is this the waste gate?? If so, it will not budge (either by hand or with pliers).

I will check the hose from the inlet manifold tomorrow and see if there is vacuum on it.

Re: Sluggish Acceleration
yes thats it. it is in the closed position at the moment, if you look in the link above you will see what goes on when the rod is moved, the pic marked as wastegate shows the flap that is mounted inside the turbo.

Re: Sluggish Acceleration
Hose looks good but when I disconnect from the top of the filter and rev the engine, I am NOT getting vacuum, I am getting air blown out towards me instead.Northern Bongolow wrote:on this thread you will see the wastegate, its at the other end of the rod that should move under vac pressure, or move when pulled with pliers.

Pic...

This is where the other end of the hose is coming from...

As for the turbo side of things, here is what is happening but the airflow is not strong enough to push the rod/wastegate open at all.

Re: Sluggish Acceleration
Also, took a drive today with the passenger seat folded back and all the way up to 3500 RPM and the wastegate shaft never moved at all.
