Hello everyone; Gearbox whine

Hi everyone,

I became the happy owner of a 1998 Bongo with AVA side conversion today. While driving it the 150 miles home I noticed quite a loud whine from what I am presuming is the gearbox at around 55 and above. It only happened it top gear, and if I lift off the accelerator it goes, but then comes back when I put the power back on. It quite high pitched. Does anyone think this is the sign of much trouble ahead or just a fluid change or something easy... please please please say it not too bad... Van has done 70k Miles

Welcone to the forum. What a shame to hear "noises" on your first bongo journey. Fingers crossed for you.

2WD or 4WD, auto or manual? Assuming auto, Does the gearbox change up and down smoothly? Is the ATF a "clean" translucent red/pink? Murky brown suggests it's due a change anyway, but not sure if that would solve the whine.

Not happening in 3rd does eliminate the diff.

thanks for the reply. sorry should have said 2WD 2.5D auto. haven't looked at fliud yet, will do tomorrow in daylight. It changes up and down just fine.

Hi peeky,it could be loads of faults causing this, the first thing that I would check is the manifolds for broken studs or gaskets.

This is the exhaust manifold bolt that shears most often;

Mine developed something like this. Very faint, high pitched, and only at certain speeds and where gearbox under load. I'm certain it's the gearbox. But it happened nearly 4 years ago and gearbox has continued to work perfectly and, if anything, the noise has lessened. I don't woody about it, and passengers can't hear it as its position specific. If gearbox went, I'm advised 2nd hand + fitting would be around £500. Mine had autofliud change 6 years ago.

thank everyone, I will check the bolts tomorrow. Fluid looks correct colour. It is quit loud at 60mph and above. Passengers have all commented "what's that noise".

Does anyone know roughly what the cost would be to get it fixed if this is the case... and even better can anyone recommend a Bongo friendly garage in mid Devon I could take it to to get it checked out? I am equal distance between Barnstaple and Exeter.

Allans in Plymouth are legendary if that is not too far off.

It might be worth checking the power steering fluid level under the drivers seat. I posted on here a while back with waht i thought was gearbox/tramisson problem, an unusal whine. It turned out i had a leak in the seals and the power steering fluid was leaking and the power steering fluid tank was almost empty. I topped it up with a ps fluid that had a leak fixer element and to my amazement the whine dissappeared.

I plan to change ATF, and Diff oil soon anyway.

OK I have managed to have a look.

g8dhe, it looks like I have a sheared bolt just like in your picture. Is this a big job? I think I will call Allans in Plymouth. It's an hour and a half from me but I want the van checked over and the manifold bolt done..... and all the other things he finds that I can't do.

I also noticed an oil leak on the rover cover under the drivers seat. I checked the engine oil and it was over full. It wasn't when I first looked at the van before I bought it. Hope this hasn't shafted something else. I will drain a bit off tomorrow. Why are people so stupid?

ATF fluid looks redish and smells like oil not toast.

Power steering fluid level is fine.

Not sure how to check the Diff oil. Can anyone let me know how to do this?

I was to change engine oil, Diff oil, ATF oil very soon but I have a 300 round trip journey on Thursday so I will just drain a bit off for now.
