Water Leak in Rural France

Post by Ian » Sun Nov 01, 2015 11:05 am

David is losing coolant at a steady rate and we need to identify where the leak is coming from. Take a look at the photo.

Image

The leak appears to be coming from the drain hole at the 6 o'clock position, above the hydraulic pipe. Is the waterpump directly above this? Any ideas?

The photo appears to show the underside of front heater fan housing so it's quite some way forward of the engine. There are two possible sources of water there: the windscreen scuttle drain pipe which can be seen just right of centre, and condensation from the A/C unit. Neither of which would result in coolant loss. A leak in the heater matrix would result in a damp patch on the carpet inside the cab. There are two large diameter steel pipes from the radiator that pass by that area and any leaks from those would be quite easy to spot.

The picture looks like condensation from the evaporator "housing",if the coolant is leaking at a steady rate it should quite easy to spot if it is external leak.

You could try something under the vehicle to highlight any leaks IE cardboard or the like.

if its loosing coolant but cannot find it it maybe the water pump. this is inline with the fan belts as viewed from the passy side, but it is hidden by the belts a leak is nearly impossible to spot even on a ramp with the bottom covers off.

have a read of this link to see how/where it commonly leaks. its best spotted with a dentist angle wead mirror and a torch.

a pressure test doesnt always find a leaking water pump as the pressure swells the seals, they usually leak when cooling and the pressure is down or relaxed.
