Courtesy lights

Post by Gefail » Wed Sep 09, 2015 5:29 pm

Hello all,
I've been tinkering on our T reg 1999 2WD Tin top since we took ownership in June. Thanks to all the contributors to the Q&A's and fact sheet, they've been invaluble. Fitted a TM4 combo which is a great for stress free journeys, leisure battery with VDR, also stress reducer after a weekends camping without EHU.
Having exchanged the internal lights for LED modules, I noticed two things:
1. The front light cluster works in manual and auto when the passenger door opens, it fails to light with the driver door although the door open warning light on the driver door works okay. Are there 2 connections to the door pin?

2. The central light works in auto when door opens but not when door closed, having had a look a the wiring, there are 3 wires from the ceiling connector to the light fitting, there are only 2 going from the connector into the roof void. So as soon as the door closes the pin, all power is cut. Any ideas?

Tried to find a drawing on-line, but can only find a blury one when magnified, may have to invest in the Bongo cd.
Cheers,
David

Right lets see;
1. Nope only a single connection, and it drives both the display and the actual lights themselves, so that is very odd indeed ? It should function identically for either front doors, the display will also indicate the sliding door being open, but it doesn't display if the rear door so you can loose all the passengers out the back without realising it!

2. Well when in Auto you would expect the light to go out with the door shut, then you slide it to Manual and it applies an earth direct, so if its not working in Manual suspect the Earth connection which is to the frame of the inner roof itself, if you drop the light off the ceiling you will see 3 wires on the loom side of the connector, Blue/Red +12 volts, Red/Green door switch, and the final wire is the chassis connection.

See the diagram above for all the circuits involved.

Thanks guys, all sorted,.....the central light was my fault, ommitted the cable to the bodywork when I ripped out the tube fitting.

The driver door was indeed the door pin contacts. Must have had enough contact to light the dashboard lamp, but not enough to light the two led panels. Bit of a clean and job done.
Have to look for something else to do next. :wink:
