Second that after side seals and internal seals going separately. Side seals were less noticeable. Effect of internal ones leaking was noticeably as you describe, also rough starting after increasingly more and more cranking. Never cut out.Simon Jones wrote:If the pump was leaky I'd expect performance to be down & running a bit lumpy rather than cut out completely. Does it stop suddenly and with no pattern? If so, I'd be wondering if it's the fuel cut-off solenoid on the pump which is what cuts the fuel supply when you turn the ignition off. They tend to fail in the open position so the engine does not switch off, but maybe the connection to it is dodgy so it's loosing power & shutting off when you're driving.

Re: Fuel pump/ seals ?
In some situations, I believe a leak/fault can cause air to be sucked in rather than diesel to be leaked out, and its air being sucked in that I seem to recall at least one owner learning was the cause of poor/non starting. Thinking back, can you connect the times that problems occurred with weather conditions. For example, was the day hot, or wet, or cold etc.?yorkshirelass wrote:I've been told that there is no leak on the pump or by the seals. Seemingly this can be found by wiping a hand around the pump...a bit difficult, but it can be done. So maybe it's not the seals , but the pump itself ?Simon Jones wrote:If the pump was leaky I'd expect performance to be down & running a bit lumpy rather than cut out completely. P.S. cmm303 has beat me to posting and seems to be pointing at the same thing (internal seals) although I note he says it never caused cutting out so the solenoid remains a centre stage suspect. In the end, with these lovely old cars, I think sometimes all you can do is work through service and parts replacement, starting at the cheapest. Its unrealistic (sadly) to expect a 20 year old Bongo to have parts that are immortal - only consolation is that if you bought something else, you'd be starting down the same road with an unknown commodity. At least with the Bongo you know, once a thing has been done that should be it for a bit, and you can start budgeting for the next thing. I keep a log of everything I do so I can review if need be.

Re: Fuel pump/ seals ?
Just spoken to Simon Rowbotton at contract mechanics, he's had a very tough time of it recently due to his Fathers sudden death. Hence the delay in responding to me. He is now hoping to come up here on Sunday, and will confirm this tonight.

Re: Fuel pump/ seals ?
ITS FIXED !!! Yes it was the pump. Simon also commented that NO ONE HAS HAD THE DRIVER SEAT OF TO CHECK FOR PROBLEMS RE THE PUMP/fuel system !. I was gob snacked .... So both Thirsk garages never even looked here. He showed me that the screws etc were still old looking and had not been touched in years. Make of this what you will folks, but I'm sickened at forking out a total of over £500.......with no problems solvedb by those so called ' mechanics '.
Anyway, I've been out in the van and it feels totally different to drive.....it's so good to feel I've got my Bongo back again.....at long last !!!
WELL DONE CONTRACT MECHANICS..SIMON ROBOTTON. A GREAT LAD TOO,!!!
A big thank you to all you forum chaps, especially mike on 4bc and northern bongolow for their help and understanding . It's good to have you lot around to talk to xxxxxxxxxxxx
Now........where can I get it wax oiled and shultzed ? Simon suggested this as all else looks good with my van.
I JUST LOVE MY BONGO !

Thanks Mike ! It's now almost a year since my problems with the van started, first ..the head went...then the pump, both expensive jobs too. Anyway it's done and is running beautifully once more.
Simon recommended I now get it wax oiled , I've never been sure of this procedure, and if it just covers up problems ? So, am now seeking quotes fir this, just got one for £440. Does this sound about right to you Mike ? He says he does the cavities too, and cleans underneath etc.
if I do get this done.......it will be bread and jam on Christmas Day !
Just thought.....it's 'service and MOT time ' next month .......bl##dy hell ???talk about never rains but it pours !!!
Thanks for your input too love, much appreciated Mike.
Take care love

Re: Fuel pump/ seals ?
Mine could do with re-waxoyling before long. A quality job using stuff like Dinitrol would probably cost about that and should involve steam cleaning then putting the car in a hot room to make sure its fully dry before a thorough spray job is done. With an old Bongo though (and I know this is true with mine) there is likely to be welding work needing doing (I've had some areas done but I think there will be other areas before long). This will need money too, and there's no point (and a real reason not to) do any waxoyling if about to get welding work done, as the (fresh) waxoyl will make the welders work much harder due to its flammability (plus welding will obviously compromise the waxoyl). My inclination would be to ask someone like Kloonsy (Dave) who is (or has been) a Bongo owner, and who has a Bongo bodywork business in Barnsley, to look the car over and assess what might need welding before waxoyling gets done. He might offer a waxoyling service too, so you could ask him. I've not used Dave myself but he seems to get good reports and I often think I might take mine to him if I can cope with the distance/leaving it there. If on a budget, a basic waxoyling job should be doable for a lot less than £400+ (say £200). The problem with all this is its unrealistic not to expect to be putting some serious money into keeping an old Bongo going at the age they are now. But there has to be the money available to spend, plus a good case for spending it! Budgeting/saving/investing ahead of trouble is the key I think, and hopefully the money spent will to some extent be reflected in the re-sale value of the Bongo, and the work done should keep you on the road for some while ahead.yorkshirelass wrote:mikeonb4c wrote:So pleased for you Pam and a big up for Simon.
