Thanks Ady, it would seem wood way ,to go and see George, and this could happen yet. However, after all advice etc and lots of thought I've decided to take it the the garage I know and trust utterly, who looked after my bongo for 7 years before I went to Devon. I've spoken to John there and he's clearing a ramp/space for me on Monday at 1 pm. He's so busy but wil fit me in due to all the upset etc. whatever HE says...I will believe, and go ahead with him. If it is the pump and he cannot fit me in for a while, then I may go to George . I'll know more after Monday love. Will post here the final verdict and action !!!

Update.......took it to my old garage in Bradford yesterday. The journey down was faultless, it ran like a dream. They took it out too and had it on the ramp etc. nothing visual anywhere to explain my probs. said it could be the pump, but it would gave to come off, sent away for pressure testing, then re fit re con one......if this was the problem. All in all about a week with the garage. They don't do courtesy cars, so a no no for me....living out in the sticks. I've not heard from Simon at contract mechanics, so have decided to ring him tomorrow. I do hope he's not still too upset to be at work ? Or am I just being selfish ???? Fingers crossed again

ring george, he will either fit a second hand one or a full recon in 1 hour.

Ady, he is so very expensive. He has a pump for sale on line for £415, I suppose plus vat and then his labour. Simon will come up here from Warwickshire and fit a pre prepared
Re con for a total £350 !!! A big difference love.

I've been through a pump scenario recently. I didn't hunt around a great deal but was coming in around for £300 + VAT for full recon & test by pump specialist plus around £150 + VAT for removal and refit by local garage (obviously allowing more time than Ady!!). Be clear what is meant by "recon". A full recondition by a specialist will replace worn components and involve pressure testing off the vehicle for several hours, whereas seals alone can be replaced in a fraction of the time at a fraction of the cost.

If George's pumps are professionally reconditioned then he is charging around £100 for the second hand pump before reconditioning. You would still have your old pump which could be bartered!

georges are full recons and he does take yer old one, or he will sell one off a running scrapper, its all down to funds available i suppose.

the bongo pump drive allows you to remove all the pipes and mountings and the timing cover and push the pump backwards leaving the gear and belt in situ if you dont need/want the belt changing, again its down to funds as its the labour that can push the price up significantly.

There's not too many places that can offer the convenience of an off-the-shelf service for fully recon fuel pumps.

I just hope to goodness it is the pump. Just remind me, have all the other avenues been explored/eliminated (filter, banjo filter, tps, fuel breather, fuel pump solenoid etc.)

Good comments here. Simons words to me were ' I can fully prep one here(pump) and fit it when I come up' no mention of mine in p/ex.....but he'd be very welcome to it at the price he has stated .
Yes al other possibilities gave been explored as far as I know. The last garage had my van for a full week, gave me a courtesy car, and took their time in following the fuel lines, inc breather pipe, filters etc. some of this was confirmed by my bradford garage yesterday, when he told me he could see where previous work had been done...inc new ties......although I don't know what was actually re- tied.
I cannot think of any other option to try to see if it is the pump , so I may as well go ahead with its renewal . If I still have the same problem AFTER it's replaced........I'll sob my heart out . I really don't know what else I can try ?????
Thanks lads for trying to help, it's so appreciated =D> =D> =D>

Just thought of a question........can the pump be tested( inc pressure) whilst it's still in situ ? I ask because someone has said it can be done on some cars?

If the pump was leaky I'd expect performance to be down & running a bit lumpy rather than cut out completely. Does it stop suddenly and with no pattern? If so, I'd be wondering if it's the fuel cut-off solenoid on the pump which is what cuts the fuel supply when you turn the ignition off. They tend to fail in the open position so the engine does not switch off, but maybe the connection to it is dodgy so it's loosing power & shutting off when you're driving.

I've been told that there is no leak on the pump or by the seals. Seemingly this can be found by wiping a hand around the pump...a bit difficult, but it can be done. So maybe it's not the seals , but the pump itself ?

Also, I had a superb run down to Bradford and back with no problems at all on Monday last. It was a joy to feel the pleasure of driving my bongo again. Yet many trips locally are just the opposite !!

AAAAAAARGH !!!
