Mobil 1000 10W40 engine oil
the need for an oil/filter change arose so I looked at the available oils with a view to semi synthetic with a balance of cost against quality. There are some expensive like Magnitec which promises unique type magnetic adhesion to surfaces that require lubrication. I have no doubt there is some merit to the two tubs of Magnitec to enable the 6.5 capacity of the 2.5 TD. Then there were some own branded very cheap`and a minefield of trying to compare pros and cons because there are that many. In the end meeting the balance of quality, cost MOBIL 1000 Semi 10W40 seemed to adequately cover quality, availability and cost. Firstly it came in 5ltrs at £25 and additional one litre at just under £10. The choice was made. This morning I had the oil/filter done with and independent that I have used before. I also had a brake fluid change as I suspected the stuff in there was probably original. I asked them to check front/rear diffs and transfer box, the front diff took a squirt.. £5 materials and £50 for labour very reasonable. Engine noticeably quieter, very pleased to find my running temperature gauge reading was almost halved. Previously the running temperature had the needle pointing at the left edge of the motif and now was half of that. The temperature characteristics were very welcome and far better than mineral which was a surprise. Plan to fit a combined sump plug temperature sensor visited and cancelled. Report that front discs were needed I already knew but was impressed they picked that up on what was a lube service.
