Engine surging under load

I am experiencing the engine surging when accelerating and when engine is under load. Overall performance seems OK and surging stops when cruising at constant or light throttle. My Bongo is a 2001 2wd diesel auto. Has anyone had a similar issue and possibly a solution?

at that age it should have the variable vane turbo, take the pipes off and see if its getting full of shi*&. the carbon can start to jam the vanes when they are altering pitch. try a good italian tune up, that sometimes works.

maybe just a fuel filter /banjo filter in the pump though, have you changed or cleaned it out.

I take it an 'Italian tune-up' is just to give it a big load of wellie ! I haven't checked the banjo filter so will have a look at that - thanks for the input.

lots of wellie. if that doesnt work try some carb cleaner inside the turbo, not while its running, as it will accelerate on it as its very flamable, it should break up the carbon.

you could also try removing the fuel pipe from the tank to the fuel filter housing and blow gently down the pipe to the tank, there is a fuel filter on the end of the pickup pipe inside the tank, these can get a little blocked up.

Classic signs of fuel starvation,the first thing I would do is change / clean all the filters.

Thanks for that thought - I will be doing as you suggest and replace fuel/air filters . A cheap fix if that cures it !
