Oil where it shouldn't be...

Happy Friday everyone,

Have started to notice a few fumes honking out the van whilst I'm sat idling at traffic lights etc. so had a look underneath for anything obvious, the only abnormality I could see is the picture below, everything else seems to be ok (no discolour of coolant, not using excessive oil, oil cap pretty clean).

I've had a hunt through the forum search facility but am being overwhelmed by the abundance of info - if you've seen a thread that is relevant and are able to point me in that direction I thank you and will happily read it.

Otherwise I would be keen for immediate thoughts?

That's a diesel from what I can see. They are prone to weepy rocker covers. Mine was like that. I reduced the problem by nipping up the rocker cover bolts in the affected area (only gently, don't want to risk damaging the rocker cover from over-tightening). However, I needed a new head this year (or the Bongo did!) so a new rocker cover gasket got fitted and now its as clean as can be. Even at its worst though I don't recall it causing a smell in the cabin. But if your engine cover clips have lost their bite, odours could leak past the engine cover rubber gasket. The clips can be made more firm by increasing the bend (just a little) in the curved metal latch wires. One odour that did come in the cab was when my diesel pump seals were leaking. But that didn't cause any smoking issue (if by fumes you include smokyness).

can you please post a picture of the full length of the rocker cover, it maybe the exhaust manifold leaking.

Thank you for the responses - definitely opened my eyes and got me thinking.

Correct it is a diesel - I will double check the rubber seal on the engine cover. There is no 'smokeyness' just something that stimulates the nostrils - I will take some more pictures in the morning.

diesels are prone to the stud going at front of engine and the exhaust manifold leaks

Check for leaks around diesel pump also - that was the smell that made it into my cab, when stationary after driving along.
