Guide for head gasket replacement

Hi new to the forum so apologies if this is easy to find but i've done a quick search and nothing has come up. I am doing the above this weekend (well taking head off then back on once tested etc.) so I am looking for a guide if there is one? I've done a diesel and V8 landy before but could do with a guide to make sure I Get it right. Also if you know where I can get the head skimmed and tested near Brackley or Banbury I'd be most grateful cheers

Others with greater techie skills will soon be along to help, but first you must find out why it failed.

No point replacing it if there is an underlying problem, and are you aware of the coolant bleeding procedure?

There's a Bongo Friendly garage near Southam who may be able to recommend a machine shop.

I am a petrol head (V6) .. but from reading posts it seems very rare (in fact i can't recall one) where the head gasket as gone on a Bongo diesel ..

Usually the head cracks between the valves ..

Cheers Bob and thanks for the warm welcome! I plan to investigate once it has been stripped down and replace where necessary. Thanks for the tipoff on garage in Southam will come in handy for the future if not for the head.

I'm probably one of the relatively small number of folk who have had a head gasket fail on it's own without any related damage to the cylinder head. I had the head skimmed and tested (twice) and it was found to be undamaged. It has since covered in excess of 20,000 miles with no further issues over the following 7 years.

Thank you Simon, I have been a member for a while now so it's good to get some use from it, first glance looks like exactly what I need. Sounds like the bill could be a bit more than I hoped for. Fingers crossed I can get it all done beofre our first trip to France in a couple of weeks. Will let you know how I get on, hope to catch up at an event at some point.

My two top tips: deck the block and use Wellseal compound when you stick it back together. Further reading:
