Sounds like the steering column knuckle starting to seize up.look under the dash where the steering column goes and you will see a universal joint, lay paper towel or rag around the area and spray with wd40 then spray grease work the steering to and fro ,try this and test

Hi Don, if you have a Petrol vehicle it would be worthwhile checking the PS belt, and of course the fluid level and condition.

Like as mentioned above ... the UJ / bearings on the steering column have been known to lack lube ..

I find that motor cycle aerosol chain lube is OK as it penetrates like a thin oil then dries to a sticky grease ..

Power steering seal kits are available .. but from some accounts to change the lot is a major job ..

Others have used 'Stop leak' (seal softener) additives with good results .. the same as used on auto. boxes ..

There are several makes like .. Lucas .. Wynes .. STP etc:...

You will probably find that a guaranteed reconditioned unit would be the best bet in many cases, the seal kits cost between £60/70 and may not cure the problem if the shaft/ram is worn.

Something like this.
