chuffing AND ticking :-)

Post by Dodgey » Wed Jul 08, 2015 5:38 pm

Thought I'd Chuck my noise issues in here too ! :-)

During my 1000 odd mile french trip last year my (seemingly) right front side started "chuffing" not too loud by clearly most of the time. Sounded to me like something rubbing as the wheels rotate. Changes frequency directly with road speed. Imagine a stiff brush on a drive shaft hitting a piece of plastic on each rotation. That kind of sound. You can feel it too through the floor.

It would go after a while and return after braking. I definitely have a warped disk. Always have had, can feel it wobble when you break. Always good enough for MOTs . I've ignored it. I assumed that chuffing was the pad rubbing.

Roll on this year.

Just before we set off for italy I noticed what sounded like a bearing on the way out at the front. A gentle wowowowow.gets a little louder with speed (starts at about 50). Gets drowned out by the engine over 70. Chuffing is gone by the way.

Driving through. Italy and all of a sudden we inherit a ticking! More of a tap tap tap . constantly . becomes audible after 50. Tap tap tap. Directly related to speed. Like a bolt on a drive shaft is hitting plastic. Goes inaudible as you drop below 50 ish. If you open the passenger window it sounds 100% like its coming from the wheel. Stick your head out the window and you are convinced. Then.... Open the drives window and it is there too , only quieter.

I've ignored it so far :-)

Just whipped off both wheels at the camp site, in my trunks. Amused a lot of onlookers... :-) no signs of anything amiss . brakes look fine. Shafts look and feel fine. Prop shaft bolts all look fine.

Going to have to continue to ignore it but something is clearly failing.

I can only guess the warped disk is beating the crap out of the brake assembly and the sound changes as the pad (or metal!) Wears.

Fingers crossed hey!!

Have a good look at the rear prop too, sounds & vibes can turn up in unusual places - our rear prop resulted in violent steering wheel shake that all pointed to the front axle

Loud Ticking / knocking gone. Took off both wheels to inspect. After that the ticking went. One wheel nut was not as tight as I'd have liked so it may have been that. Brakes are scraping and chuffing as usual. Will renew disks and pads when I get back.
