Ok update. Bought a DIY kit just so I could check pressure.

Clicked it on to the low input. 0psi.

Gave it some gas and when it hit 20psi everything kicked in. I could hear the engine working really hard. However I couldnt get the psi past 75.

Check this morning and it has dropped to 30 psi. So it must be a leak. Hopefully just an O ring somewhere, found out my neighbours son in law is an aircon mechanic.

Have also emailed ATS for a refund as they surely should have checked for a leak before pumping refrigerate out into the environment!

At least it seems like it is just a gassing issue. Which is also a common complaint of my wife ;)

When I bought my Bongo I forgot to check the air conditioning until the hot weather came along. My Bongo has the dual climate option so I set it to 18 and pressed auto, disappointingly only warm air came out of the vents same for the rear system. I did some research to find out how re-gassing is carried out and watched YouTube videos on the subject. I learned that you need to know the amount of refrigerant required by your system and the amount of PAG oil to add. It turns out that the more expensive professional re-gassing machines automatically work out how much PAG oil to add so you only need to tell them the quantity of refrigerant. Vehicles should have a sticker under the bonnet with this information however I could not find one in English or Japanese. I found out from the Bongo importers air conditioning man that the dual systems require 900g of refrigerant. I took the Bongo to my local ATS on Preston Road Blackpool who where waiting on a delivery of refrigerant. Their air con man explained that before re-gassing they need to check the system for leaks so hooked it up to his machine and pressurized the system with Hydrogen. We left the Bongo connected for over an hour and a half and the Bong passed the leak test. I took the Bongo back the day after to be re-gassed. They connected the machine to the Bongo, there are two connection points under the bonnet. The high pressure point is the one with the black cap with the letter H on it in front of the radiator and the low pressure point is round the back with a green cap with the letter L on it. To access the low pressure point remove the black plastic air intake ducting. The machine was set to 900g and we left it to it. The process takes a long time as the machine goes through various stages of filling and balancing and produced a print out of every action and result.
The air conditioning now blows ice cold on both front and rear systems and the thing that goes clunk every now and then when the air con is running goes clunk again.

Proper job! Explains why it can't be done properly in 20 mins while you wait.

Aircon Obsession

Post by dante231 » Mon Jul 28, 2014 9:03 pm

Ok, first leak was the accumulator. Part from Bongo spares, easy switch and no leak from there.

Now you say, there is another leak. of course!

Now this one is from a connection to this part

6150.

I am guessing just an O ring, but can you tell me what 6150 is in the schematics?! I dont want to meddle with something serious.

Have reinvested in an aircon guy...

There's a pictogram of a hand by 6150. Which means it's pointing you to page 6150. Which is the Evaporator.

But if you look on page 6135A you will see that the Evaporator uses O rings 76-754E & 61-JXA. If your aircon man can confirm these are the ones you require, get in touch, because we have these in stock.

Sorry! Didn't see the reply.

Yes sorted. Aircon guy fixed the o rings and then regassed. It worked for a while and then another o ring went. Just had it sorted again.

The problem with any of these drive in drive out Kwik Fit type places is that all they do to prove there's no leak is a pressure test. This will not show up smaller leaks as they can take days to loose a noticeable amount of gas.

The guy that looks after the A/C on our cars uses Nitrogen & a dye to pressurise the system. He then uses a Nitrogen sniffer & also a UV tourch to check the whole system. It's incredibly effective.

Only once he's happy there are no leaks will he fill the system finally.

this was an interesting read

as the bongo air con unit ( digital display type ) only goes down to 18 degs - I thought my aircon was just poor

the wifes Peugeot goes down to 15 degs - which feels icey cold

I just thought the 18 degs was just 18 degs and thought was normal

it has slowly felt warmer over time - to the point where it wasn't much different than blowing air from the vents without the air con activated

shown my bro in law ( mechanic and air con fillers ) - he stated - yep def needs a re gas

he stated there must be some gas in there as you can hear the compressor come on

so not a bad start

I will let you know how I get on - asked him to book it in and re gas etc

previous owner never did it or had receipts for it - and ive had her 7 years plus

hopefully re gas and all is sorted

I think setting temp to lowest ignores cabin temp and blasts max cold. Similar, but with heat, when set to highest temp.

Our mechanic (friend) found a couple of leaky o rings.

All regassed again and was blowing FREEZING cold all holiday.

Still going strong.

my bro - in law did mine just before I went newquay

there must have been some gas in mine because the clutch thingy engaged and he said that was a good start whilst just visually looking - but on the inspection glass it was just bubbling - and clear liquid

the air con machine once set up - does a diagnose pressure check and allsorts - then gasses it

aircon went down to 12 -13 degs ( measured cold air from blowers ) as stated I think the 18 degs is just a setting etc

spy glass all nice and green liquid inside

4 wks on - still nice and cold

although - only used it once, lol wasn't hot enough and the passengers wanted the windows open to feel the breeze

I cant complain as he only charged me 30 quid

and a drink for the airbags

=D>

gave him 20 which he was reluctant to take - but took it in the end

what a star :D
