What's the clunk...

Post by bongolow » Wed Jan 24, 2007 4:10 pm

I expect this has been asked before but I can't find anything - what is it that goes 'clunk' underneath a couple of minutes after turning the engine off?

Not sure if this helps, but I have experienced the following clunks related to engine switch-off:

1. Loud thumps / clunks immediately after the engine switches off was traced to worn bushes on the turbo pipes. A quick tighten of a bolt solved this (test driving a freda I didn't end up buying)

2. Very slight clunk / tick sometimes heared a few minutes after switch off - I assume its a relay and don't worry about it.

It's the number two clunk - only the one and it seems the same time delay each time (though I haven't actually timed it).

It was up on a ramp last week and definitely no illegal imigrants up there now - they've all scarpered but the clunk is still there... :D :D

Just a guess, but possibly could have something to do with a semi de-activated 'turbo timer' ?. The illegal in this country, engine run-on turbo protection device.

I'm sure I heard one in operation the other day on a Subaru. The lady with it was faffing about outside with the engine running, and as I watched, with her still outside and not touching it, the engine switched off, all on it's own.
