Filling and painting roof

So, my roof looks like this:


I think previous owners didn't know the height!

Thinking of respraying using the Plastikote spray cans as per previous discussions.
What recommendation for filling the gashes?

I think spray cans could be a nightmare for an area like that, esp if priming etc needed. I'd seriously consider rollering esp as with a flat surface runs are less of an issue (but holding spray cans horizontal might be?). Rollering would give a textured finish that could be achieved (with the right paint) in one session, with no spray problems, and using a tough and plastic friendly paint. One or two people had their roofs done in some stuff called - I think - plastikote - and they looked great. Have a search and see what you can find. And keep us posted on what you end up doing

Mine is up for the same treatment next year and I for one would very much like to know where. From my own research I could not find a single place online that gave details of custom plasti-dipping anything. The issue with spray painting is the practicality of being high enough above the bongo to do it. Getting to the middle etc.

If you do the decals which makes a lot of sense it turns into quite a big job. I heard they are a nightmare to remove as well. Spraying it with cans is appealing and cheap and I reckon it could be done well notwithstanding the impractical height part of the job. (Maybe step ladders would be possible if not rather dangerous to lean and stretch on)

I would not be prepared to remove the AFT myself knowing that if that gets screwed up it is going to be a headache that would not be worth tidying it up for. I would also be inclined to keep same colour at the existing roof as that is the colour it is meant to be and it l looks good I think.

I would want a smooth finish to keep it in line with the original.

I watch the thread with great interest.

If someone somewhere did a good deal on this I think us AFT'ers would form an orderly queue.

Hi, I have no experience of doing this myself I just wandered if you have thaught of spraying with the roof raised I know you will need ladders but they are easy to get hold off? I saw some ally steps on wheels in a scrap metal bin at work so I had em been stood for a couple of years tip I got the bongo rolling is not a bad idea, someone on here did it not long ago, looked fab in black on a white van I think? Anyway good luck with it

If you raised the roof you could curtain the whole van from the rubber edge on the raised roof down to the wheels?

Just been reading a bit about Plastidip. One supplier says it lasts about 3 years then needs a re-coat. That doesn't sound so good

I roller brushed mine with rustoleum (did the whole van). It will need about 3 coats and you can rub it down with 800 grit wet paper after each coat (await a week after each coat before rubbing it down). Rollering is great as there is no need to mask.
For filler, just use some flexible bumper stuff from Halfords.

Yup, reckon that'd be the best stuff to use for the roof. Personally I thnk the orange peel effect of rollering alone might look good on the roof (ad no-ones going to see 90% of it anyway!)

You're spot on...I had a roof -flag on mine, and subsequently put a solar panel on, and half a flag would look daft, plus it gets enormously hot in the summer here, and the flag got a bit damaged, so...I did exactly that...stripped the roof and rollered some cheapish paint from the paint factor with a shaggy brush to get a stippled finish...The colour is not the same as the re-spray, so that it looks obvious that it's a protective coat....and it's easy to touch up , because the barn cats use it as a trampoline (8 of them ), plus the bats and birds like to bomb it!....
