The complete distributor has been swapped with one from another vehicle and it worked in the other Bongo, yet the one from working Bongo made no difference in Andy's. The complete ignition system was also swapped and the problem stayed the same.

Not quite yet. Marks stripped it all back down and is going back over it with a fine tooth comb. He going to ring Allan tomorrow if time permits with the stripped down engine in front of him.

Here is an update from Mark verbatim.
Seems promising to me.

Hi Andy right update I tried the thing with a timing light on Friday afternoon with the new battery on and it showed the ignition timing too be way out.
So have been racking my brains why it would be so far out its not enough like the dizzy was 180 degrees out which we can't do as it will not fit. But it was out a lot but then thinking about it the timing is meant too be checked at idle speed which is about 750rpm but cranking speed is about 200rpm so almost a quarter so it would be out so I don't see how this is going too help us.
I have now taken he whole front of the engine back apart and am going too check through everything we have done when changing the cam seals I have taken the cam wheels off and sat one on top the other too see if the location pegs and timing marks are the same and they are so it would not matter if you got them the wrong way round the only difference I can see is two of the wheels have a lip on the edge too stop the cam belt riding off the pulleys. This is were I am at. See attached pics.
I have also added a pic I have got from mazda parts center of the location of each cam wheel.

Photos can be seen here

OK Doone
Whats the best time to ring tomorrow? Mark has set aside some spare time tomorrow to do some work on my bongo (which by the way is called Bob, but I thought that might confuse issues during discussion).

Fingers crossed, I am desolate.

Ta. Have avoided looking at the calendar, but just checked its been in 11 weeks. My mum is really fed up too as I can get her in her wheelchair in the back so she has not been on a proper jaunt for a while. Off camping under canvas this weekend!!!!!

Hi. I'm flat out busy today.
I'm not working tomorrow (Saturday) so Mark is welcome to call me around 9am.
We can put our heads together. See if we can work anything out. Tho it's tricky when he seems to have done what he should.
Please call on my mobile, contact details on THIS LINK.

Hi, only just joined the site and saw your ongoing troubles with your Van. Firstly remain hopeful ! I had exactly the same problem 2 years ago. I have a 1997 V6 2.5 petrol, been amazingly reliable. went in for an oil leak and I asked for the cam belt to be changed. Van started perfectly post oil leak sorting but would not start post cam belt change, would turn over but not catch and fire. My mechanic went down all the same avenues as you and yours. It took 3 months but eventually it turned out to be a timing issue, with the cam belt change it alters the timing but it was not something logical. Im not technical and pulling out the paperwork this morning they didn't put the detail on it in terms of what they had to do, but they did say they had to go back to old school mechanic methods to reset. I'll call them later and see if they remember exactly what they did. I'm sure they wouldn't mind speaking to you. I will update later once I have spoken to them. Regards Neil

I still think the timing light route has some value. the timing when cranking over for starting may be different from when idling btu it still needs to be somewhere near (just before) TDC for the thing to start. When he says it is way out, how far out is that?
