Re: Auto gearbox won't change up
It's the same fluid in both the torque converter and the box .. the same fluid gets pumped around both ..
About ten years back I had an Omega 2.5 TD and took that in to a local auto specialist for a sump off service .. I watched while he did it ..
One of the things he did was 'nip up the brake bands' .. A simple few seconds job .. dunno if that is relevant on Mazda boxes ..

Yeah - it's just that I didn't drain the TQ itself. Will wait for fluid to be pumped around and then drop the sump again.
Would brake bands play up when warm?

Re: Auto gearbox won't change up
Can't say about the brake (clutch) bands .. just some thing that came into my mind when (re) reading your posts ..
The auto box guy just did it as part of the routine fluid / filter / clean out / service..
I remember him slackening a locking nut .. tightening the adjuster .. then backing it out a touch .. I recall him saying .. that to the book .. it should be torqued to a specific setting .. but as he had been doing the job daily for years he had the right 'feel' to nip them up right ..
Have you tried any auto box repairs for over the phone info / advise ..
This is one of the best companies in the World .. http://www.atp-group.com/home.php .. I remember in the 1960's I had a Mk2 V8 Daimler Jag (SP 250) with a autobox fault .. back then they was in a unit of a closed down coal mining pit ... guy took of the sump looked at it .. said you have the wrong valve block .. got the right one off the shelf .. fitted it all within 15 minutes .. years later I had problems with an auto box on a MK1 Cavalier .. popped over to there new super posh place .. explained what was happening (auto fluid getting into the engine via the carb) a few quid and a new none return solenoid later .. job sorted ..
Point is ... we are amateurs .. these guys know from experience .. maybe give them a call ..
This is the guy who serviced my Omega .. small place .. very friendly / communicative .. I would think if you gave them a call they may offer you constructive advise .. 01543 572100

Re: Auto gearbox won't change up
Update on my original problem - Auto gearbox won't change up.
After a lie down, some brain-soothing balm and a funeral - not mine - I finally changed the fuel filter, cleaned the banjo fitting and replaced the air filter while I was at it. Just driven a couple of miles. SAME PROBLEM. Gearbox changes up to 2nd (engine cold) but won't change up any more then appears to go into neutral and the engine races. If I 'accelerate', the engine races more and then there's a gear change which seems as though it's recovered, but then immediately the engine slips into 'neutral' again and there's no drive to the wheels. Strange and I'm stumped. Could there be a sensor failing, and if so, what is the most likely? Any other ideas anyone? Thanks.

Re: Auto gearbox won't change up
Maybe time to phone a friend (Aka .. an auto box specialist) ..
Not knocking the guy who fitted the box .. but it's not a very professional to fit a second had box / converter ... still with the old gungy old second hand fluid still in it .. !!

Re: Auto gearbox won't change up
Mike - there are 2 similar problems here. One from the OP and one from me. The thread is blending into one!! Hahaha.
Yep - I'm waiting to hear from specialist.
Terminally bewildered - sounds identical to my issue tbh. I'm also thinking a tenpreture sensor has failed - 2 boxes with indentical problems for me. What sensor is the question though!!!! Argghhh

Re: Auto gearbox won't change up
UPDATE 10383!
Hi all,
Well this evening has been rather busy, dropped the sump again and flushed Torque coverter.
After starting, the box immediately slipped. (It normally does this when warm)
So after another look around, We noticed a bush missing from the selector cable. Wondering if the issue could be related e.g not correctly engaging gears correctly.
Any ideas where I could get the bush/cable to give this a whirl? Can't seem to locate one anywhere.
Ta

Re: Auto gearbox won't change up
IT LIVES!!
After months of slippage - the van is running great.
Turns out it was the TPS; malfunctioning either when gear box temp was hot/or a duration of time had passed. Old Sensor worked fine on start up - so this was putting us off the scent!!
I was just about to purchase another box too!! Phew.
Thanks for all your help guys. It really is much appreciated.
Moral of the story, before changing a gear box, check out the TPS first!!

funny thing - unless I sub consciously read something about it - just not sinking in
I did read that this was a gadget to change 1st with such problems
6 th sense or just stupid catch up
you learn something everyday

Re: Auto gearbox won't change up
What made things more complicated as that the thread was started by 'terminallybewilderded' about problem not changing up and then 'pongobongo' came along with slippage issues, so some of the replies got a bit out of context. Anyway, that's one happy camper at least and we've all learnt stuff we hope we never need to do anything with
.
