New Shape LPG Spare Wheel

Post by BongoBonkers » Tue Jun 02, 2015 3:13 pm

Hello

We have a new shape with LPG conversion, hence the spare wheel space underneath has been occupied by the gas tank. We have a full size spare that we put in the trailer if we take it but without the trailer we travel with no spare wheel.

Does anyone in a similar situation have any ingenious solutions for storing a full size spare wheel?

We carry sealant, a rudimentary puncture repair kit, a compressor and have breakdown cover but it would be nice to have a spare wheel on board!

I don't think a rear ladder fits the new shape? Has anyone fitted a spare wheel to the front on bull bars, outback style? I guess that's likely illegal?

I just thought/hoped someone in a similar situation might have come up with a good idea?

Thanks
Dave

I'm pretty sure Simon has a skinny mounted on a rear ladder, otherwise its just a case of living with it inside. :?
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

Yep - this is what I do for longer trips & yes, you can get ladders to fit later type.

You can get 'drop down' tow bar spare wheel carriers ..

Before we had our LPG system removed, we kept the skinny spare under the rear seat in a fitted cover. It was out of the way and generally, not a problem.

I'm planning on making a tow bar mounted rack along the lines of the one Mike has shown which is made by Bak-Rak: http://www.bak-rak.com/spare-wheel-rak.htm

Use the bak-rak spare wheel carrier on our bongo, takes the spare no problem however it does obscure the rear number plate on the bongo,so we had to mount one on the back-rak unit along with a rear number plate light.

Hi
Simon...
You and me both...I went down to the metal stockist t'other day to search out what they have. It will also function as a seat when folded down, and a handy step for the older dogs to get in 8) . My only worry is that it will effectively add to the tow-bar weight when it's used for towing, as I'm not using the tow-ball to mount it. I'm still considering alternatives, but the space for an oblong tank is rather restricted in the Bongo, making filling access difficult.
Cheers
Helen

The system was on the van when we bought it. It wasn't a driving factor of the purchase.

The LPG controller (NX Gas) was knackered. It was only driving 5 of the 6 injectors. I replaced the output components on all six channels, but it still only fired 5. Petrol was fine, it only affected the LPG injectors. I couldn't find any suppliers of the NX Gas system and the only after sales reference to it that I could find was in Australia. This was the main reason we had it removed, but there were other more minor reasons such as the cost of re-installation (the injectors we had were low quality plastic ones) vs staying with petrol, space in the cabin (spare wheel) and distance to travel for LPG servicing and repair (40 min journey the wrong direction). Our nearest LPG station is 10 miles away.

We'd have loved to stick with LPG, but it was going to cost us £1200 to have the system replaced.
