have you got any flashing yellow lights on the dash. flashing hold light is gearbox fault, flashing heater plug coil light is generally lecky/alternator fault.

Nope no flashy lights (hold button works as it should too).

Owe you all a beer or two for this assistance. Much appreciated all.

I don't know the answers to these. Will have a look. Thanks.
Have a had a look at the air filter and that's pretty mucky in one place. Have ordered replacement plus new fuel filter on the basis that it won't do any harm to replace them both whether they need replacing or not. Will look to clean the banjo filter too. So I gather that the gear change behaviour I described CAN be due to fuel 'starvation' then . . . . ?
I ordered a filter set from bongofury, removed the fuel filter and cleaned the banjo filter BUT when I came to re-fit the white plastic sediment trap to the new fuel filter, there wasn't enough room - only about 2cm while my sediment trap needs an insertion depth of approx 5cm ! Does anyone know what fuel filter I need if it's not the standard one? Looking at the old filter which I removed, the identification marks seem to be:
15411 - 78E01
RZ0907Q

I have a photo of the sediment trap but don't know how to post it.

How peculiar. You mean the White plastic seal/sensor to bottom of the fuel filter?

Let me know if this solves your problem (when it fits) - mine is still playing up (when warm or 20mins driving). Very intermittent.

In a field with the van at mo, so will check out put of the alternator asap.

Yes, It's about 5cm long beyond the white screw cap. That insert has a white plastic rod, with an endstop, and a black cylinder which can slide up and down it. That rod, complete with black cylinder, is supposed to sit INSIDE the fuel filter when the white cap is scewed down onto its O-ring. Only about 2cm will fit in the new fuel filter and there's no way that the white plastic threads can engage. Yes, peculiar, as you say. I've even wondered whether it might be possible to cut through the thin membrane stopping full insertion, but that would allow fuel to bypass the filter I guess, and that would defeat the object. I'll see if I can post an image.

Same as mine - you must have the wrong size fuel filter. Got a pic of that?

It's the filter included in the bongfury shop filter kit for diesel bongos.

Here's the filter:

The part number on the photo of the new filter matches one listed in the compatible parts database: http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/member ... _parts.pdf. That would suggest it's the right number either on the wrong filter, or it's faulty.

it looks the correct one to me simon, i wonder if the valve is faulty, can you push up the internal disc that is blocking the sensor with a screwdriver or something .

Bought some of that too Ray1955.

Haven't put in yet as waiting for a atf pump to arrive. Did you remove a litre or two of the aft first?

Hoping this will solve it - as its really starting to do my head in. Even considered part ex'ing it!!!!!!

You can pick up a second hand gearbox for around £250 which is probably more cost effective than selling it with a known fault.

If you are changing the pump the box as to be drained anyway ..

IF ... you are going to try it before fitting the pump .. generally Lucas ATF conditioner comes in 591ml bottles (just over half a litre) .. so why drain out a litre or two ..??

Unless your fluid is well over the full mark (checked while warm & engine running) then it should be OK ..
