door lock barrel replacement from other Mazdas?

Post by BuddyBongo » Wed May 06, 2015 1:42 am

Some b'stard popped the drivers door lock to steal precisely nothing...didnt even take the cashews in the glovebox....amateur!!
Anyway...the lock is obviously munted and im looking to get another but the lack of friendees in NZ means theres few parts available.....will a lock barrel from another type of Mazda fit? And am I right in thinking I can get it altered to fit my keys?
Might even fit remote central locking whilst ive got the panel off :)

All advice appreciated

Hi Buddy, personally I would just fit Remote central locking and blank of the barrel aperture (if badly damaged)I cant remember when I last used a key to open a door on a vehicle.

Good Luck.

Thanks @Rita I did think about just doing that but I figured it wouldnt be too much cost or hassle, for aesthetic reasons and would help if and when I sell him on. Theres no damage the door itself so just looks like a straight swap but I have no idea where to source a barrel....
Would a standard bongo van (non friendee) barrel fit do you think?

Hi Buddy, the problem with fitting a barrel from another vehicle is that you will have two different sets of keys, the RCL kit are quite reasonably priced and you will only need one solenoid.

Hi
The answer to all Bongo theft problems ( or most) is to convert to "Suicide Doors", where you fit the door hinges at the rear, and open from the front, and completely remove the handles, and smooth them over...You open the doors remotely by pressing the fob, and the door pops open....VERY kool!
Cheers

@Rita - yes they do look very reasonably priced and thats why i thought i might as well fit one anyway. I thought you could get a lock 'rekeyed' ...so it fits the key I already have? Im sure Ive seen one of the car alarm places in town offering this service? $50 for RCL, $20 ish for a barrel & another $20 to get it rekeyed...all in all thats almost as cheap as a bag of cashew nuts!!!

@helen&tony.... I might just go the whole hog and get delorean gull wings put on instead ;-)

The locks can be re-keyed by any autolocksmith.

We have a 1998 Mazda 323f and found out, by accident, that the door can be opened by our Bongo key.
Thus, I guess your search may not be futile

Thanks @ Tony x - that's a good lead - it looks like I should be able to get hold of a 323 lock pretty easily :D . Anyone on here a locksmith that might be able to identify the potential pitfalls of installing a lock from another vehicle? I understand the basic mechanics of the lock but if the connections at the back are slightly different will that be a huge problem?

As a possible quick fix (assuming it will fit) why not take the lock and barrel from the sliding door and fit that to the drivers door? Assuming you have standard non-remote central locking, you could still lock/unlock the sliding door and fit a blanking plate over the hole. If you do then track down a non-matching lock barrel it will be less of an inconvenience to have it on the side door which will get less use.

Another great suggestion thanks @Simon Jones.... I will take a look tonight... If I do decide to swap them round is there any kind of maintainence I could be doing whilst the sliding door panel is off?

I was impressed by the knowledge of a good auto locksmith such as Tom (hypno211) so it would be worth trying to locate one. These guys can work on barrels and keys directly from key numbers. So it can all be done by post without surrendering any existing keys or locks.

So long as the replacement barrel takes the same blank, it should be possible to set it to use the same key number as your other locks. However I don't know how the key number data works and how easily it ports across car models. i.e. Does a Bongo key number applied to, say, a 323 barrel produce the desired result?
