Oily Engine - possible causes? (photos included)

Post by Dodgey » Mon Mar 30, 2015 4:32 pm

I was mucking around removing the glow plugs today (occasional lumpy starting and whispy smoke for the 1st half mile) and I think I found my main oil leak (it'a always mentioned on my MOTs as an advisory).

Here is the oily area of the block (not the head at all) - driver side - goes all the way down. Is fairly local - underneath - to the 1st (front) cylinder.

Now here is a pic of where it seems to be coming from: An inlet manifold bolt area..

You can see how it seems to be eminating from the bolt area and trickling down.

Finally, here is a pic of the manifold from above (that's not the same bolt - its the top one of the same cylinder)

As you can see it's a bit oily, but then so is the one on the other end, but no leak underneath.

Inlet gasket? (btw - it's a slow leak - I change the oil once a year and its never low)

the oil leak may be 12-601 on this link, the camshaft front oil seal, this leaks and runs round on the gasket line then down the drivers side.

the inlet manifold maybe full of crud from the egr, and the intercooler pipes and cooler maybe full of oil, this is supposed to be pulled into the engine and burned but if the pipes/cooler insnt airtight the oily gasses will stall and condense back to liquid, check all the pipework and the cooler for damage/leaks.
