Slow coolant loss

Post by gearfreak » Mon Mar 30, 2015 3:31 pm

The low coolant alarm went off again this morning, and I only topped up the coolant last week when I changed the oil. Not really driven the Bongo more than 50 miles since then. I've checked for obvious drips and can't see anything. No mayonnaise in the oil, and the oil had no water in it when I changed it. Suggestions on common places that I may find the leak would be good.....

(Don't really want to chuck radweld or similar in)

Hoses
check under van in drivers seat area common failure

Rear heater

Hard to find one is water pump leak
You need a little inspection mirror and look at a hole at 6 o'clock on the pump housing ( another one that's mentioned on here often)

Rad

Run engine up to temp then check every where
Gas safe heating engineer / plumber if you need any advice just shout.

all of the above but if your struggling ask your garage to do a coolant system pressure leak test on the expansion tank not the rad top, or fit a cycle pump to the overflow pipe on the expansion tank and inflate to no more than 1 bar, then look round for leaks, if non is found then suspect the water pump, this is the hard one to find as the pressure inside the system when running can seal the seals, so it can leak when cooling down and the pressure drops to nil.
