ENGINE KEEPS CUTTING OUT/poor start up
I've had probs with start up and engine cutting out for a few weeks now. Due to last farce with local garage, I have muddled on.....unsafely sometimes !
Engine very lumpy on start up/ does not catch properly. Even after a few / lots of revs, it can just cut out on moving off. If I manage to get a few miles on.....it can just cut out, even on level ground. Going up or downhill on start up is just a nightmare. Yesterday took the van into VISAR garage Thirsk, left it overnight for them to start it today etc. seems no problem to them,!!!!! I'm sure it's fuel related. Any ideas please ?

Petrol or diesel? Have you looked at the fuel filter?

It's a diesel. Garage are now going to change it ! Can it be seen/ inspect without removing it.

They are also thinking of replacing sender unit......but gave not checked this !?
Re: ENGINE KEEPS CUTTING OUT/poor start up
Cleaning out or replacing the fuel filter would be a good place to start, as it is relatively cheap. I'd be a little worried if the garage are just proposing to change random parts!
Other more technical people will be along to advise but it does sound like it could be fuel related, so filter or pump would be top of the suspect list I would have thought. The sender is another possibility but I don't see why parking on a hill would make a difference if it is the sender? Perhaps someone can enlighten us on that?
Are the fuel lines all in good condition, is it letting in air to the system? Are you leaking any fuel when you park up?

I've no idea re the fuel lines, but will ask them...thanks. No fuel leaks seen. Just spoken to garage...new fuel filter fitted. They have driven it before AND after new filter, and had no problem with it whatsoever. Yet I've had dozens of sudden stops in recent weeks. Yesterday I drove from here ,Whitby, to osmotherly with only two engine stops (approx 40 miles) . Parked up for an hour or so, then started off for the garage at Thirsk. Poor start up, lots of juddering etc...all on flat ground. Set off eventually, then had to turn down a winding hill towards A19. Engine Cut out on second bend, so sat there a few minutes and eventually got going again. Not good with traffic up ones backside !!!
I don't know if air is getting in to fuel tank/ lines......I'd hoped the garage would have sussed all this out, they've had it 24 hours now.

Re: ENGINE KEEPS CUTTING OUT/poor start up
hi pam, karena had similar recently but a new filter fixed it ok.
the best way to start a diesel bongo is without using the throttle, if you throttle it during or just after start up it turns the glow plugs off so you will get juddering, it sounds like the glowplugs need replacing or the cold start solenoids are not working correctly.
he has said about replacing the sender unit, this may be because it has a thimble filter fitted on the tank fuel pickup. if he removes the pipe from the fuel filter to the tank he can blow back and clear the filter.
try removing the fuel tank cap if it stalls pam if this helps by letting air into the tank then the fuel tank vent mounted on the inner side of the chassis may be blocked, its mounted next to the fuel tank, its a black cotton reel sized filter that can get blocked with road dirt, remove and wash out in water.
if you open the fuel tank filler flap, at the 6 oclock position there is a small hole, this is another tank breather for when your filling with fuel, poke a length of welding wire down it to clear it.
oh and dont forget the tiny fuel filter in the top of the fuel pump inlet, the banjo filter.
regards ady.

Oh Ady......you are a love. I sort of understood what you have said, but I don't have any welding wire handy, and I don't know where the fuel tank is...except that I've got one.....underneath....somewhere !
I've now spoken to Simon Rowbotton, from contract mechanics. He says he's pretty sure it's the side seals on the fuel tank. He told me to tell VISAR garage to wipe a hand over the fuel pump( area ? ) and if it's wet it tells it's own story of a leak on it. Renewing the seals will cure it!! Hopefully it will be......Ta Da !!!! Tomorrow will tell all. Thanks Ady . Love to the family xx

Re: ENGINE KEEPS CUTTING OUT/poor start up
Hi Brian, lovely to hear from you too love. I'm still well....no sign of return of the cancer. I really have been very lucky !! It's at times such as now, with a poorly bongo, that I truly know how much I depend on it. A car could never work for me....I need a loo on board !!!! I'm hoping today will see the fault being found, tho I'm not holding my breath. I feel a real nuisance to the garage, as they still believe there is nothing wrong with it. Brian......I KNOW there is a big problem here, why on earth can it not be found ?Bongoplod wrote:Good to see a post from you Pam,albeit not for the best circumstances.Hope all goes well in the end

Sorry love for going on, just worried that I'll pick it up and it will do the same all over again . Then what do I do ?
Hope your 'pins' are still holding for you, and that you are still getting out and about enjoying life love.
Take care Brian. Xxx
