Burning Smell - 2lt Petrol Bongo 2001

Post by donaldthomps » Tue Mar 03, 2015 3:41 pm

Hi, I have got a burning smell coming from the underside of the Bongo after its been on a run.

It's driving fine and changing gear OK, I have just come back from the garage after a service and they cannot find anything obvious.

It's sort of a plastic smell, I'm not loosing oil and the drive is clean.

Any clues for me?

Thanks in advance...

Burning rubber smell? Do a search on that if it is rubber, as I came on here with similar last year and it was diagnosed as a pulley that has some sort of rubber bonding. (don't know if this is the same for 2.0l Petrol but might be a good starting point)

Thanks for that.

Should I just buy the part and get it fitted?

The next question is.. where can I get the part required if you happen to know?

Thanks for the advice.

I think it's worth investigating and proving the diagnosis before replacing items (possibly unnecessarily).

Second Simon's advice. I have a V6 which has a wiff, specially noticeable when reversing up the drive on a cold morning. Others who own V6's have also noticed something similar. The suggestion has been oil leaking from cam seals but I got it with no sign of a leak. My cam seals have just started leaking and were changed last week. If this diagnosis had been correct I would have expected the wiff to have got worse, but it was less noticeable than usual this year, only being noticed on one cold morning.

I am not an engineer, but thinking it through I suspect EGR fumes discharged under the Bongo and then reversed through. Nothing has been ever been found as a source so I have just accepted it as part of the Bongo. Unless you can identify a source for the problem don't start replacing parts.

I have a 2l 2001 & recently the Alternator belt tensioner seized. That (On a long run) burned through the belt. A tad difficult to check whilst stationary. Really requires removal & examination.
Not saying its certain - but one for the list to check :-)
Good luck

I've had this on a 2l and on a V6, never found out what was wrong, just got used to it.

another fault on the 2ltr is the first bit of the exhaust that bolts to the manifold, this suffers from corrosion, it is a twin walled section, the inner wall splits then the outer gets really hot, sometimes letting out the gasses.
does it sound noisy. you can repair it by cutting off the outer then welding the inner then replacing the outer skin.

Mines the same 2.0L, burning plastic rubber smell, not all the time though.
I need to look at it this weekend as it's started making a funny noise now.

Couple of questions - how do you diagnose it as the crank pulley, as mine only smells when under load, so on the drive might be difficult? And secondly where can you get replacements if that is what it is? There is only one on ebay second hand at the moment for £75, which seems a lot for second hand? If there previous posts are correct in how difficult this is to get off, do I really want to put a second hand one on, for that to fail and have to do it again? Does anyone sell new?

If the pulley is the Harmonic type and is faulty one of the most common symptoms is the engine vibrating more than normal IE out of tune.(balance)

Thanks for the links Simon and Northern. Your tutorial Northern is what will prevent me doing this myself, that is the one I have read up on! Firstly I don't have the facilities to make a similar special tool but with arthritis definitely don't have the strength to get that bolt undone! Not sure what I'm going to do but with a planned trip with the caravan of around 2000 miles this summer (let alone weekends) I'm thinking I should get this looked at fairly swiftly.
