Spare wheel mechanism

Post by haybal » Tue Feb 10, 2015 3:24 pm

Hi all
I have just discovered that my spare wheel has GONE. Not sure if the cable has been cut or snapped, but I need a new mechanism. Is it just the four bolts to undo for a straight swap or more to it? ( Brand new tyre too)

Cheers

In the beginning there was nothing , then God said "Let there be Light".....There was still nothing , but ,by crikey, you could see it better.

Yes 4 bolts and your good to go...Fit a skinny the next time, they don't seem to steal them.

PS you might be able to get the carrier from an LPG converter.

Not looked underneath yet but where can you chain/padlock it to?

Sure I could find part of the chassis to chain it too.

If you have a towbar you could fit a chain round that. Pretty certain it would be very difficult to lower the mechanism from below due to the position of the socket that the winding bar normally locates to. What is the state of the mechanism? Is it still attached via 4 bolts, has the wire been cut or corroded?

Hi Simon

The mechanism looks ok and still attached by all 4 bolts, the wire doesn't look that bad to be honest. The more likely answer is it snapped due to age,the thing is where was I and at what speed was I travelling when it decided to depart(hope no-one was hurt). I think I may put some sort of backup cable/chain on to be on the safe side. No towbar by the way.

I was thinking of that earlier on ....is there someone somewhere driving about with a Modified spare wheel on the bonnet .

I had that happen with a bread board a few years ago, unfortunately it was empty.
