Stalling - 2.5 diesel

Post by Puma931 » Sat Feb 07, 2015 5:57 pm

Hi, when engine is warm the van stalls when you slow down or stop. Does not do it all the time but when it happens the revs fall to about 500 rpm just at 5 ish mph and by the time you stop it stalls. Any ideas? It also takes 3 or 4 attempts to restart when hot??

Does it feel like the torque converter is not disengaging (assuming its an auto)? What happens when you put it into neutral?

Try slackening off the fuel filler cap and clean out the banjo filter too.

Yes it's and auto. It feels like it's not disengaging or changing down when you slow down (not sure if autos do this) only seems to be a problem now and then and shifting to neutral saves the stall.

if its never been done

dropping the sump of the auto box

cleaning the amazing crap you will find in sump

and washing its filter in petrol

followed by a refill

can cure minor ills with them

mine seemed happier anyway

not much else is diy really

What is the tick over RPM when cold and then hot with the vehicle in park or neutral ?.

Tick over is unusually around 800 rpm when cold, hot, park, neutral and drive. When I get the intermittent problem the revs drop as I come to a stop and the engine stalls, unless I'm quick enough to recognise when it is about to happen and shift to neutral to save the stall.

I've ordered the sump gasket so will change the ATF and clean the filter etc. Hopefully this will resolve this intermittent problem.

I think the problem is with the engine, as on a 170 mile trip it started to loose power (doing 70+) and at one stage (after 100 miles) cut out at 50mph.
After a while it restarted and ran fine at 55mph. It only seems to attempt to stall after a brisk drive on the motorway. After some research I think it might be fuel filters so I removed the main filter and there were tiny rusty bits (not many) in the diesel and it was a bit murky with a blue tinge :?: Fitting a new filter later today and will also clean the banjo filter. Hopefully, this will sort out the issue.

Whilst removing the main fuel filter a small 10cm material braded vacuum hose dropped off the engine (not sure from where). Any ideas where this could have come from.

Thanks

Mathew
