unless you have any evidence that your ATF has been been replaced in the laste two years and that the filter has had a good clean I'd highly recommend you put by 2-3 hours one weekend to do the job, it's straight forward enough and you may wele be surprised with the results...especially if this has not been done sonce 1997! Granted from your symptoms there may be other issues going on...one other thing, there gearing your experiencing is this intermittent or can you replicate it all the time? Nothing ventured nothing gained so they say!

Regards,
The gearing can be replicated the same everytime, so not intermittent. What should I read into this?

Speaking to a few garages up here it looks like it's going to a gearbox specialist.

I think that's what I'd do. I've read that solenoid packs failing is a cause of autobox trouble. If so it's not a rebuild job and cost may not be as bad as the worst. Good luck, keep us posted.

In today with the gearbox dude, the doom and gloom will come later I'm sure.......... I jokingly said I don't want a big bill for the gearbox, his reply was "I make a good living out of that quote"..... :)

Gearbox rebuild is the verdict, changing the fluid simply would not cut it. Will await the works to finish to see if I get to the bottom of what caused this and let you guys know.

Late reply here - gear box was rebuilt. Never got to the bottom of what cuased it but when we changed the timing belt it was 17 years old so the ATF fluid had not been touched in that time also at a guess.

It's all I got. Now I know the cost of the sucking machine ATF fluid change at the same garage it will be in yearly!

Glad it's sorted at least and hopefully that's an end to it.
