Hunting and cutting out

Post by Pompeysteve » Sun Dec 14, 2014 6:38 pm

Hi all,
Has anyone's bongo suffered with poor running at tick over or low speed?. At the moment it's intermittent, will cut out and/or Rev at tick over up and down, you have to knock it into natural to save it cutting out.
I've got a 2001 v6 with lpg. Technicians have checked out the lpg system all fine. Any suggestions.
Cheers, steve.

In cold weather mine did that when firstly changing over to LPG in slow moving town traffic ..

I put a new set pf plugs in and closed the gap to 1mm .. that helped .. but also putting new plugs leads on .. a new dizzy cap and rotor made a vast difference ..

A few thoughts: is it the same on petrol as well as LPG? If it is then you're probably looking at something other than fuel such as ignition or air filter.

If the problem is more prominent on gas then I'd start with the ignition system as it needs to be 100% to run correctly. Before I had LPG installed, I replaced all 7 HT leads, rotor arm, distributer cap and fitted NGK Laserline plugs. Another possible problem could be the lamda sensor or signal which can cause poor running especially if there is any lead in the exhaust system. Have you had it hooked up to gas analyser to see how it's running? What type of LPG system have you got?

Had same problem with mine changed the leads and fitted iridium plugs cured the problem, make sure you get quality leads like magnacor or the proper Mazda leads Ian sells in the bongo shop. I also bought a rotor arm and dizzy cap from the shop have not fitted them yet as the leads and new plugs have cured the fault. Sometimes my bongo would run ok until it was asked to do a bit of work like climb a steep hill, problem was there on both petrol and lpg.

LPG1 is the equivalent of BKR5E-11 conventional plug. It may also suit the 2.0 if you know the standard part number http://ngkntk.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/ ... _LOGOS.pdf

Its a common problem in winter!

Problems I have had!

During the changeover from petrol to lpg lately it cuts out but this due to the very cold temperatures here in the frozen North! Problem being it changes over to gas too soon. If the aircon is running that seems to give it a few more revs to help keep it going but I often get stalls at roundabouts and junctions until the engine is piping hot. During this time I just run on petrol.

I have had the lpg system now for around11 months and it is due a service which might help but as it was around this time when I got it fitted and the problem was there from day one. They tried everything then from changing sensors, tweaking this and that till eventually we just settled on what we could have! Before I had it done I renewed plugs, dizzy cap, rotor and leads and soon after a new battery.

So the solution is to alter the sensor/timing of the changeover which means running on petrol longer. Not a problem for likes of me as I get paid 45p per mile but I guess everyone wants it to run on lpg as quick as possible to save cash, nothing wrong with that! Best to have it tweaked winter settings and then summer when it warms up a bit.

On another note! I see petrol prices have fallen rapidly but lpg is staying the same 64.9 , at least around here anyway?

Let us know if it's fine with the gas off as that will eliminate the LPG system.

Hi Simon,
It's doing it on both. I have a stag lpg system, which the fitters have looked at. The system is all ok,typical it wouldn't play up when they had it!. I'm having the auto box fluid changed,so will get my local garage to have a look then. Depending what they say I will probably get new district cap,ht leads and plugs.
Cheers.

Steve, you could be looking at as much as £190 for a set of genuine Mazda leads, you need to buy the best you can afford especially for LPG. I purchased a set of magnacor leads about £140 including postage, van seems to perform better all round since my 17 yr old leads were replaced.
