Yeah, says to remove the alternator, as I have -& now I wonder, if I hadn't done that would the pulley have been easier to lock so that I could get the 4 bolts out!?

You have to crack the 4 bolts initially, easiest way is with all belts in place and tensioned. YOur need to remove the alternator to get the pump out, as it won't fit through the gap.
